So, start at 2 turns out and go from there (it is a place to start).
Yes. Originally I started at ~2 turns out and could never get out further to the point of getting the idle to go "up" and then down so I could find the sweet spot, and I checked my plug about that time while doing some other work and it was all sooty...which I think means too rich. Which would explain the soot and the smell of fuel I always smelled. So, after I finally (delicately) went all the way in and then started out, I got a good, smooth idle at ~1/3 to 1 turn and then it starts to decrease. With the screw all the way in I 'think' it wants to start losing it's smoothness, but I cannot go in any further so I split what I think it the difference and it seems to be good there about halvsies AND no more fuel smell other than what is obvious tank cap venting.
I have been trying to pinpoint my lower mpg (around 44ish in the city) which is what initiated the screw check, but the bike runs good overall and I must just be getting what I should be with the primary city driving I do (~8 miles to work one way, several stop lights, and mostly 30-45mph roads the whole way).
