Messed up my bike today.  Looking for advice.
10/12/12 at 14:00:19

So like a freaking retard, I managed to drop an axe head on my front fender of my bike today.   AngryIt put a nice dent in it, and obviously chipped the paint.  A local body shop wanted $200-300 to fix it, so I said F@^# that.

My question is, is the color of my bike a stock color?  I'm guessing not because it has been debadged, and i haven't seen another one this color.  If it is a stock color, do any of you happen to know what the color is so that I can get a correct color match touch up paint?

I'll be trying to pop the dent myself, and then hopefully touch up the paint with the same color.  Any of you body work guys have any advice on how to do so properly?  Body work is certainly not my strong point.  Worst case scenario......there will be a sticker on my bike.

Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I had a chevelle that was darn near the same color.....might still have the remainded of paint from that.  Probably crap by now though.  Gotta love those retard moments.

Thanks for the responses

War stories form around stuff like this.

I was riding my Savage through a dangerous hood late at night when suddenly I heard the crack of a 9mm, and subsequent ricochet off the car next to me...

Yeah.....
I mean I know it's not a big deal.  It's just that it pisses me off having something that's in good shape and then damaging it.  Plus I plan on selling the bike next spring, so this will just make it look bad.

I'm just going to take the fender off, and try to pop it out some with a ballpean hammer.  Is there anything I should do to the fender that can help pop the dent out?  I can't think of anything other than just protecting the rest of the fender when I do it, and being careful to work on it gently.  I just don't want to crack the paint when I try popping it out.  Anyone have any advice on how to avoid this?  Or is it not a concern?

I have done a lot of back yard body work in my day. That would be an easy fix. I suggest you get a book on bodywork.
What I would do is tap out the dent leaving it just below the surface of the fender, sand off all the paint in the dent, apply a thin coat of filler, sand that level with the surrounding fender (if you get it in one app of filler good for you), prime with scratch filling primer, sand smooth (times 3), finish coat and clear coat. You can go to an automotive paint supply and get the colour custom mixed. It will be close, but not perfect, but you won't notice because the fender is so far away from any other painted part. Total cost around $50 assuming $30 for the paint.
If you decide to put a decal on it then you will have to mask out the fender so as to leave just the spot that you are working on, skip the colour coat and just clear coat.

Yeah, with the luck of the symmetry you could just drill it and add a hood ornament.

Always be careful when drilling a fender,... there's a tire under there...

set a nice diamond in that perfectly designed ding and maybe it will double for some guy's 'engagement motorcycle' to his lady friend?

in all seriousness, sorry you got the ding. sounds like you have some sound advice and I hope it comes out well for you.  Wink
