Fire breathing Carb?
10/05/12 at 15:49:24

I am new here so bear with me. I recently acquired an 00' from my cousin. It's got a Jardin exhaust, no filter (assuming he took everything off and was meaning to upgrade??) and has been sitting up for 6 months. Still had some go go juice in her so we fired it up. After awhile it got going. First thing I noticed was a little hesitation if you give it a little throttle and then a swift "poof poof" of air or gas popping out of the carb (mind you there is no filter or boot just the back side wide open) If I pull back on the throttle it roars and sounds like a proper bike, only does the other with a slight bit of throttle. any suggestions? Did I get a crapper?

Just clean out the stale fuel, refill with some fresh (ethanol free if you can find some), stretch a piece of old stocking or sock over the carb throat and fire it back up. Don't ride it much until you get an air filter for it. Should be as simple as that, could need the jets cleaned, won't know until you try some fresh fuel.

got the carb off and cleaned it pretty well. it needed it. went ahead and replaced the old old spark plug and fitted an old stocking over the open end of the card. got rid of old gas and got some fresh but it is still doing the same thing.

how many miles?

You might want to do a cam chain inspect.

got a little over 21k miles. ok so i am a little confused. would it not having a filter on it make it hesitate like it is and spit out the backside of the carb? Im linking a video of the bike running so you guys can listen.

Also you might have done valve adjustment soon and as already mentioned look after the cam chain situation!

took everyone's advice. checked the valve clearance and it was within specs. got the side cover off and to my surprise the tensioner had already been modded. am I missing something in my ignorance?

cool, let's hope he got the cam timing right.

I'd put a filter on it, some seafoam or other carb cleaner in the gas and see how she runs.  some spitting can be expected at low rpm's.  especially with one that's been sitting.  don't wind her out w/out being in gear and going.

Be careful about putting a non stock air filter on, some block part of the intake to the carb.

& By that he means, they can cover over a part of the inlet the carb uses,, its not just a matter of some minor amount of restricted air flow.
