Another Petcock bites the dust
09/27/12 at 07:24:42

So here are the symptoms:
  • Slightly sluggish throttle 1st-4th gear.

  • Really Sluggish throttle at 5th and can't get past 55MPH.

  • Throttle sporadically takes off in 5th gear allowing me to reach 60.

Troubleshooting:
  • Checked Air Filter. NO GO

  • Tapped Float Bowl. NO GO

  • CHANGED OVER TO RAPTOR 660 PETCOCK.  Smiley Smiley Smiley Smiley

Current status:
Smiley Smiley Smiley Cheesy Cheesy Grin Grin Grin Cool Cool Cool

My questions as a new owner of a beautiful, wonderful, dazzling petcock.
  • 1) Do I need to switch the petcock to OFF position when parked for 8 hours at work?

  • 2) Does the petcock make the bike idle higher?

  • 3) How do I know if I have fuel in my oil?

1)  It would be a good idea to learn to switch the petcock off whenever you park for an extended period.  You may never, ever have a sticky float problem......but it is remotely possible.
2)  The petcock should not affect the idle speed.  Could be the old petcock had a vacuum or fuel leak that the new petcock doesn't.
3)  If the oil level has risen, or the crankcase smells like gasoline...it could have fuel in it.

Dave,

Current oil level reads fine but the bike had an oil change right before I bought it. I saw the work order for the oil change. I've only had the bike for 1,989 miles and 4 months.  Would I be better off getting an oil change just to be on the safe side?

Yes, if the oil is real dirty.

Thanks Arnold.
Thanks Dave.

I just saved a bunch of money on my motorcycle by switching to Suzuki Savage.com! Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

How much do you supposed I saved if I had taken my motorcycle into dealer and they replaced parts?

I need to donate to the site that keeps money in my wallet and out of the dealers hands.

There's a button for that.  Look at the row of buttons at the top of the page!

Isn't it time for an oil change anyway?

Yes

2) Does the petcock make the bike idle higher?
Yes it can, 2 possible reasons, more consistent bowl fill, or vacuum leaks.

The level is higher than the last time you looked at it?  yeah, you should check every day.

Sad Sad Sad
I went out for lunch today and a for several seconds 5th was sluggish again. i WOULDN'T CLIMB PAST 50mph.

I let off the throttle some they gave it gas and it was fine.
What going on here?
The throttle turns all the way and the half moon shape on the carb turn all the way.

Any ideas?

Starving for fuel, bad fuel/air mix? Nothing is clogging the gas tank cap venting? Dirty jet possibly?
Do you get backfiring? Does it always idle normally?

Not one you are going to like..
I had a similar problem.  It acted like there was a "sweet spot" on the throttle position where it would finally get up and go.. sometimes.

Mine turned out to be very fine cracks in the diaphragm at the top of the slide in the carb.

It would flex, leak vacuum, and the slide would drop.

The only way to find out if that is your problem is to pull the slide.

refer to http://www.bikebandit.com/2002-suzuki-savage-650-ls650p/o/m147696#sch243515

#2 is the slide assembly.  The top funnel shaped part is the rubber diaphragm.

How do I check bad fuel air mix?

I took apart the gas cap and I can't tell if it's clogged. One side had a silver ball rattling around the other seemed like a light colored filter or something.

Dirty jet possibly?
How do I clean jets?

Do you get backfiring?
a little sputter when I decelerate.

Does it always idle normally?
It's been idling a little higher since the new petcock.

Is it mechanic time?

I would say you have a sticky slide.
you can try seafoam or a carb clean.

Cap vent clogged would do that every time if it was clogged, at higher rpms, creates a vacuum in the tank making it difficult for the fuel to get out of the tank fast enough. Not sure it can happen with stock tank, mine is long gone.
Could be a vacuum leak somewhere. If you are comfortable disassembling the carb and clean it all up, jets and bowl.
Also wouldnt hurt to look at the plug, it will tell you if the bike is running too lean or too rich, throw a new plug in while you're at it.

Vers,
What's a sticky slide?

I've never taken apart a carb before.

The cylinder inside your carb that houses the jet needle.
