I keep hearing the rumor that fuel injection will be required after some date, but no one seems to be able to quote a source. As far as I know, the EPA has NEVER specifically required fuel injection on anything. They, and the European Union (EU) and California Air Resources Board (CARB), have set certain emissions requirements that makers must meet. If carbureted machinery can meet the requirements, it is legal. If not, then other methods such as computer-controlled fuel injection must be used. At least in the USA, any modifications that increase those emissions is strictly illegal under Federal law - even though those laws are seldom enforced. And noise is an emission.

Reply #35 - 09/29/12 at 15:15:15 i'd like to see a 650+ tu series bike. the little 250 is pretty nice and the fuel injection seems to work pretty well (i only have 2 days on one at msf class, but thought man this would be great with a larger displacement engine in it).

You are too funny! I called the same dealership but talked to the sales department not the service department. He actually got online (I could tell) and said it was the same. That a side, do you really think an EFI would cost the same as a carb bike? I doubt it. They would have to add more than just $100 to the 2012 sales price. Just my two cents.

Side note: I love EFI bikes. No hassles to start it. Two minutes warm up and go. I told myself that I would never buy another carb bike because of the difference. However, when I had a chance to buy my S40 I went for it. I like to size and weight of the bike. If they were to make it an EFI it would be a great little bike.

I tend to agree. I think the only reason we luddites on this forum prefer the carbie is because of hot rodding--we like the ol skool nature of the LS650 and the ol skool ways of hopping it up for speed. You'll get no hate for EFI from me.

There is also the matter that many of the members of this board have re-jetted their carbs for various reasons, such as changes in mufflers, and altitude. You can remap an injected machine, but it takes more hardware and software than most of the people on this site can muster. Re-jetting a carb is not a big deal, and can be done by almost anyone on this site.

You do know FI is a whole lot cheaper to replace right ... cos the fleabay is full of bikes that have crashed and have intact FI systems.
I bought GSXR ones for 25 bucks.
