D1708 Savage LS650 restoration thread

Well Its been sitting outside rotting for about 5 years so please bear with me and this will properly be a slow restoration thread. However I do like making progress threads so when I DO finish I can look back at what I've accomplished.

(only 10k miles on her which is very low for her age! 1990 reg)

To buy list - to get it running:

Clutch lever and perch
Clutch cable
Battery
Petrol Tank (or somehow remove inside rust)
Service parts

If anyone is selling any of these please tell me.

Welcome and good luck. If it has been outside for five years, I might suggest you add a set of tires and tubes to your list. I guess that would be "tyres" since you are not from London Kentucky. I always heard rumors about there being a London somewhere in England.

Ah yes. Im from England - London. I definitely will be replacing tires. Wow i forgot these have inner tubes!

I currently ride this (yamaha yzfr125) and they are tubeless

I lived in London way back in 1994, up in Priory Road, NW6 4NP (Kilburn High Street, Camden Town

)

I then moved to Camberley (GU15 4LP) and thence to a small hamlet called Upavon (SN9 6BT)

Your Savage is in very good shape to start with.

May I suggest you start off with the insides: a complete oil change, oil filter and air filter; take off the carburettor and, if you aren't oriented, have a specialist refurbish it; most certainly the little rubber gaskets will need to be renewed.

Secondly, check the electrical system; have the bugs got at it? Is is OK or have the wires rotted away?

Third, clutch and gearbox. Flush the gearbox and renex the gear oil.
The clutch is a wet (oil bath) multidisc, so be v e r y careful when you operate it the first few times because a plate or two may have bound together.

Fourth, refurbish the front brake pump, replace the oil and check the brake pads. The rear drum may need disassembly in order to check the brake shoes and certainly you will need to grease the pivots.

How's the front fork? New oil? New seals? Are the rear dampers sqeaky?

The belt drive is strong and sturdy, but the rubber may well age and crack; it may be a wise thing to source a replacement.

Only then do replace tubes and tyres...

Thank you for a very informative post! Camden town isnt too far away from me. I think i will 'cheat' and bring it to my local to tell me whats needs doing and get them to basically clean carb etc. My bike is Fuel Injected and Ive only worked on that. Forogt to mention im 19 and been riding for 1 year.

Well, let me tell you, the day you will finally start her up and get in the saddle, your first thoughts could quite possibly be "HUH ???" Huh

I mean, the Savage is definitely the other way 'round from your current café racer.

On the other hand, you will definitely enjoy the 55mpg (UK rated, = 12mi/liter)) she should happily deliver (my worst is 10mi/liter in city commuting)
AND the leisurely country cruising.

The savage is definitely the ultimate lightweight two-lane country cruiser!

Just to give you an idea, when I lived in Camberley I would regularly take the A25 to drive to Gatwick Airport, shorter and quicker compared to the always busy M25 !
(explanation fot the Americans: maps.google.com, plan trip from Camberley, UK to Gatwick Airport, see the route take highway "M25" for 48 miles, then click "avoid motorways" and it'll re-route you to the A-25 local road =40 miles, a much nicer drive)

Next summer we all want a postcard from Land's End Wink

Tip, take the A30 to Basingstoke, B3400 to Andover, then A303, stop for tea at Stonehenge, drop down to Salisbury for a proper lunch at the White Hart,
ride on A30 all the way to Exeter (sleep at the local White Hart, deserves dinner there too!) then along the A30 to Land's End!
Retrace your route back home.
OR
From Exeter ride along the A303 all the way to Basingstoke and M3 back home (quicker, but it'll kill you and ruin the ride, I know, I've done both)
