Author defends Monsanto GM study as EU orders review

(Reuters) -- The French author of a study linking a type of genetically modified corn to higher health risks in rats dismissed criticism of his research methods on Thursday, describing the work as the most detailed study to date on the subject.

Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen and colleagues said on Wednesday that rats fed on Monsanto's genetically modified corn or exposed to its top-selling weed killer suffered tumors and multiple organ damage and premature death.

But experts not involved with the study were skeptical, describing the French team's statistical methods as unconventional and accusing them of going "on a statistical fishing trip."

Speaking at a news conference in Brussels on Thursday, Seralini defended the peer-reviewed study, which was published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology.

"This study has been evaluated by the world's best food toxicology magazine, which took much more time than people who reacted within 24 hours without reading the study," he told Reuters Television.

"I'm waiting for criticism from scientists who have already published material in journals … on the effects of GMOs and pesticides on health, in order to debate fairly with peers who are real scientists, and not lobbyists."

Earlier, the European Commission said it had asked the EU's food safety authority, EFSA, to verify the results of the French study and report their findings.

"EFSA's mandate is to verify what this group of scientists has presented, to look at their research conditions, look at how the animals were treated," Commission health spokesman Frederic Vincent told a regular news briefing.

"We hope that by the end of the year we will have an EFSA opinion on this piece of scientific research."

In 2003, EFSA published a safety assessment of the GM corn variety known as NK603, which is tolerant to Monsanto's Roundup weed killer. The assessment concluded that NK603 was as safe as non-GM corn, after which the European Union granted approval for its use in food and feed.

Seralini said EFSA's assessments were less rigorous than his team's study.

"GMOs have been evaluated in a extremely poor and lax way with much less analysis than we have done. It's the world's most detailed and longest study. Therefore, some people are responsible and guilty of authorizing this GMO after only three months," he said.

You do know that the world can support 25 billion people right and I didn't say that, webster did ... and this is how we will do that.
@ 10 billion all bets are off ... we will have to plant locust gene impregnated corn so it can grow in west texas without water or soil. If a locust can live in that environment ... forget locust, how about rattle snake ... Yea rattle snake gene implanted corn.
Cool.

Just about every food stuff that grows or walks has been genetically modified. You would have a rough time finding a seed stock today that has the same makeup genetically as a seed stock of the 1800's.. Some of it is evolution, some of the evolution is defense mechanisms developed by the plant itself, and yes, some are developed by man..

I don't believe in the use of chemicals to kill weeds/insects in food crops, there are natural predators and methods that do the same thing, most are a little more labor intensive..

Check out the Georgia Guidestones,, learn all about them, then tell me who paid to have them done,

Thats an open challenge to everyone,

Ayyyuupppp.. Whoever decided on what to put on them, whoever it was that wanted them there, in 8 languages, chose to do it in secret. No one knows where the $$$ came from, or even the true identity of the agent who placed the order.. but just look at what it says,
& then, go back in history & consider the warnings from people in high office, about there being a powerful force, unseen, guiding things.

& think about the things that are happening, disease levels, economic problems, not just here, look in Europe, heck even China is starting to hurt some, ( I guess when the customers cant buy as much, it hurts, huhh? Probably mor3e to it than that).
Make not of the way the economies of Iraq & Libya were. Not invo9lved in the Wo9rld Bank, IMF stuff. Sovereign, internally supported, not dependent.

Heres some insight into what is happening. This is how business gets done,
http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=confessions+of+an+economic+hit+man...

Reality, as understood by the general public, doesnt exist,
The realities of the world are vastly corrupt, incredibly underhanded &, on the surface, complicated. Once one starts seeing behind the curtain, a whole new world opens up. I SO wish I lived in the America I was told I was growing up in when I was a kid. At age 12, I started seeing things werent as I was being told. It took me until about 8 or 9 years ago to find the info I needed to prove it, then, more & more stuff just pops up, every so often, more info,, its something,,its not fun, its very sobering,
But, its less complex once ya get behind the curtain,

Disease is exploding, They keep telling us to protect ourselves, take that shot,, drink that fluoride water, & eat that processed food, because youre too poor & in too much of a hurry to buy good food & fix it.
&, as we create more & more dependent people, the goobs will tell them they must have their shots to get their benefits,, just wait, just wait,
