Tune up?
09/16/12 at 17:23:58

I just got a 2007 s40 with 750 miles on it.The bike is in real nice shape. It is a bit of of a jumpy/knocking type ride(not smooth acceleration)is this normal for a single or does it need a tune up.I doubt the previous owner did much with such low miles. It is my first bike and Im not much of a mechanic. Thx

it feels almost like its not getting enough fuel.it gets better after it warms up,but its not real smooth, hard to explain. It is the worst when its on the cold side,it gets better but even at higher rpm it feels sluggish.

Im not sure how old the gas was,I filled it with fresh gas,It wasnt a dealer sale, but a dealer salesman sold it to me. said maint was done to the bike,im not so sure .Think I should take it for a once over at a mechanic? or is that a waste.

Youll be ahead to solve this at home. You topped it off with fresh gas, but gas has been sitting in it a long time. YOu bought a bike that is low mileage, but its so low mileage that what it is is, documented neglect. Put some Sea Foam in it & run it thru a tank, do that a few times if need be,Tractor supply sells it for $10.00, parts stores are $13.00. Someone will be along shortly to tell you it doesnt do anything,,dont listen. I thot the same thing. My backhoe sounded like it was about to throw a chunk thru the block, I tried several injector cleaners, several times. I dumped some Sea Foam in it & could hear a difference in a few minutes. Ive run 3 thru it now & it sounds great,,
Dont go dumpin any car oil in it, stick with Motorcycle wet clutch approved stuff.
Regular gas, your baby doesnt need "the best".

The diaphragm on the petcock may not have survived the sitting with old gas eating on it, do the petcock test.
Serowbot will point the way.,,.

I'll risk displaying my ignorance. Are you pushing the choke all the way in after a couple of miles?

Choke in or on or out? If the choke is in, it is out. If the choke is out, it is in... Roll Eyes

Push in-no choke
pull out-choke

I'm seeing the same sort of thing on my 05.  I start up (choke out one click), let it warm up for about 4-5 min, choke in, take off.  For the first 5 min or so of my ride, the bike is "jumpy" or what I would describe as "jerky".  After that (at this point, I'm on the highway during my normal commute), it gets more smooth but the jerkiness never quite goes away completely.

I haven't gotten to the bottom of this issue on my bike.  I bought it about 3 months ago and made sure to change the oil and air filter (easy stuff).  I gave it one treatment of Sea Foam and that didn't seem to really have any effect.  I'll give the Sea Foam another round, given what I've read here.  At some point soon, I plan on doing that petcock test.

Let us know if you figure anything out, CJB.
