Rear brake light cable disconnected from the pedal
09/16/12 at 11:42:50
I can’t reattach the cable and it all appears to be there but not sure since I don’t know what it looked like originally. I have searched part diagrams and I still can’t figure out how it attaches. Looks to be a trap for the cable attached to the brake cable linkage by a pin. I can place the break light wire into the hole but can’t figure out what holds it there and when I press the pedal it just comes out. Please help pictures would be nice.

there's a little plastic ring that holds it in place.
if it's not there then it's gone (here's your sign)
you can wrap a bit of wire in it's place, small paper clip works.

Is the plastic ring on the cable behind the wire cap or is it a separate piece?
Thanks for the pic and the help...

it's behind the metal ball on the wire end. the plastic piece looks kinda like a flanged bushing. Once it breaks the ball end of the wire slips out of the piece of metal that attaches it to the brake pedal. I didn't have much luck with using a piece of wire to fix mine and ended up ordering a new brake light cable to fix mine.

Ok I see the plastic but the flange part must have broken off. It makes sense to me now. I’m going to try and use a butt connector and order a new cable if that doesn’t work.
Thanks,

Paper clip worked!!!
Hope that it last long enough that I can get it inspected and renew my registration.

I went to Lowes and bought some small washers. I think they were #4 lock washers. (Lock washers already have a split in them). Bent it open, slipped it over, clamped it down.

Great idea. I never would have thought of that. If mine ever breaks again I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks Paraquat

NP, dude.
After I realized I've never had a rear brake light when using the foot pedal I researched it here.
I found a picture here posted by V was able to see the difference between a good one and what I had.

This shows a better picture of what's going on.
EDIT:
Crappy picture showing the shoulder of the bushing is missing.
Cardboard backdrop and bushing pulled down.
Crappy cell phone picture with the washer in place.
