Stand for removing back wheel
09/15/12 at 18:47:15
I need to remove the back wheel in order to replace my rear brake shoes. I realized today that I don't have any sort of stand or lift to get the bike up to where I can do that. Any suggestions on an inexpensive solution that works well with our bikes?
The Clymer manual suggests putting wood blocks under the engine, but doesn't elaborate further. Does anyone have any experience doing it that way?

Put a jack under the exhaust bracket, leave the kickstand down. The bike will stand on the front wheel, the kickstand and the jack and the back wheel will come off the ground.

Several folks around here hang their bikes from the rafters in their garages, lifting with a comealong. I've got a motorcycle/ATV lift, but have ever had to actually take a wheel off...

You can lean the bike over, slide a block under the swing arm, stand it up & the tire comes off the ground. Tie it off & youre there..
Come along/rope, strong limb, rafter,, youre there
Lots of answers for that one,.

I use a motorcycle jack I got from Sears last year. I just used it today, in fact, to take off the rear wheel so I could carve out the RYCA swingarm some more. It works well, and comes in handy for all kinds of motorcycle work, and for miscellanous garage/workshop duties like oil changes on low-slung cars.

That's what I do. I use a hydraulic floor jack. I also put a couple of boards under the kickstand first to get it a little higher. Also, lock the forks and put a zip tie around the front brake lever to keep front wheel from moving. Works well.

Thanks for all the great advise everyone. Sounds like the jack+kickstand plan is the way to go. I don't have a specific motorcycle jack or a nice hydraulic floor jack, but I imagine that the cheap one from the trunk of my car would probably get the job done.
