The War On Religion
09/08/12 at 13:50:32

Mitt Romney continues to attack President Obama for policies he supported as governor of Massachusetts with a new ad Thursday morning that accuses the administration of waging “a war on religion.”

You want to know what a war on religion is? Ask the guy who shot up the Sikh Temple. Ask the guy who shot up the Unitarians in Tennessee. Ask the guy who shot Dr. Tiller in church. That's a f*cking war on religion, and it's being waged by the right.

Take This Quiz:

"How to Determine if Your Religious Liberty Is Being Threatened in Just 10 Quick Questions."

Just pick "A" or "B" for each question.

1. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am not allowed to go to a religious service of my own choosing.
B) Others are allowed to go to religious services of their own choosing.

2. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am not allowed to marry the person I love legally, even though my religious community blesses my marriage.
B) Some states refuse to enforce my own particular religious beliefs on marriage on those two guys in line down at the courthouse.

3. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am being forced to use birth control.
B) I am unable to force others to not use birth control.

4. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am not allowed to pray privately.
B) I am not allowed to force others to pray the prayers of my faith publicly.

5. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) Being a member of my faith means that I can be bullied without legal recourse.
B) I am no longer allowed to use my faith to bully gay kids with impunity.

6. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am not allowed to purchase, read or possess religious books or material.
B) Others are allowed to have access books, movies and websites that I do not like.

7. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) My religious group is not allowed equal protection under the establishment clause.
B) My religious group is not allowed to use public funds, buildings and resources as we would like, for whatever purposes we might like.

8. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) Another religious group has been declared the official faith of my country.
B) My own religious group is not given status as the official faith of my country.

9. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) My religious community is not allowed to build a house of worship in my community.
B) A religious community I do not like wants to build a house of worship in my community.

10. My religious liberty is at risk because:
A) I am not allowed to teach my children the creation stories of our faith at home.
B) Public school science classes are teaching science.

Scoring key:

If you answered "A" to any question, then perhaps your religious liberty is indeed at stake. You and your faith group have every right to now advocate for equal protection under the law. But just remember this one little, constitutional, concept: this means you can fight for your equality -- not your superiority.

If you answered "B" to any question, then not only is your religious liberty not at stake, but there is a strong chance that you are oppressing the religious liberties of others. This is the point where I would invite you to refer back to the tenets of your faith, especially the ones about your neighbors.

There's nothing wrong with having religious or spiritual convictions, by the way. There IS something wrong, however, with using said convictions for the purpose of political and social oppression. I guess some people, namely Mitt Romney and his right-wing supporters, can't tell the difference.

As an Atheist I find this question hard to answer. I don't get handfuls of cash like the Christians do.

There is something wrong with having religious convictions... it's just plain stupid.
Honestly, I mean this with all sincerity, do you think a bearded, robed, self illuminating figure will descend from the Heavens?

We are created in His image?
We are flawed, weak, violent, scared, greedy. If this were a science project I'd at least find the humanity and decency to pull the plug on it.

Yes Steve, I now do subscribe to your religious or rather your non-religious philosophy 100%.

Are we created in "his image"?...ha ha, what an anthropomorphic vision of the realty of the universe and the laws of physics that govern it....laughable.

There is no God, just us. A violent nasty species of hairless apes who are only happy when we kill each other, or other animals, or other races, or other religions, or other cultures, or whatever else is available to kill, or maim, or torture.

A gracious, forgiving, all powerful God the father who watches over us from up in the sky, who is kindly and loving, and yet allows unspeakable disease's and horrors to befall little girls, or baby boys, or saintly adults, while the truly wicked go unpunished?

What utter bullshlt religion is!! Religion is the greatest perpetrator of war and hate the world has ever known. Even here on this board we try to civilly hate each other, but because we have this one common interest, our SS bikes, we try to get along...

Here is a verse for believers or non-believers alike, it's very profound, and very cool either way.

Forever Alone:

The sky is deep, the sky is dark,
The light of stars are cold and stark.

When I look up, I fill with fear.
If all we have is what lies here.

This lonely world, this troubled place,
the cold dead stars and empty space...

I see not why to persevere,
nor why to laugh or shed a tear,
nor why to sleep or ever wake,
no promises to keep and none to make.

And so at night I raise my eyes
to study the cold mysterious skies--
that arch above us, cold as stone.

Are you there God?

…….or are we alone?

Atheism,... it explains,.. a lot...

Fastest growing religion in the civilised world...

Atheism never be disappoints...

Life is too short,.. no doubt...
... but, it's nice to know you're not stuck for all eternity...

Three score and ten, just ain't long enough...
I think I could go 400 to 600 pleasurable years... before I was voluntarily done...
... but, eternity,... defines torture...

I wish I could save my last two weeks, and stop in to visit for an hour, every 20 years or so...
Even  then,... I'd probably be done in 5 or 10 visits...

Maybe if we just fly around in space long enough we will find "God".

"One might ask, "What does God need with animal sacrifice? With a human sacrifice? With a catastrophic flood? With billions of galaxies and trillions of stars and millions of unstoppably destructive black holes? What does God need with congenital diseases and a planet made of shifting plates that cause earthquakes and tsunamis? Isn't the whole point of omnipotence that God could make a good world without all these needlessly silly or harmful phenomena?" Moreover, why should humans obey the commands of someone as capricious, jealous, petty, and violent as the God of the Jewish scriptures?"

How could anyone look at the big picture, all the advancements made, all the scientific discoveries, and still believe that mumbo jumbo from so many countless years ago. Don't get me wrong, some of the ideals are alright, but most of it is just silly nonsense.

The average man does not know what to do with this life, yet wants another one which will last forever.

"Guess we'll all find out for sure one day." WM

No you won't find out anything at all because once you die you will instantly be in totally oblivion. You know of course that the universe as we know it has been in existence for some 15 billion years or so.

...Now where were you, and what were you doing for those past 15 billion years? You were no where and you did nothing because you did not exist, just as you will no longer exist post death.

Now for those who believe in Heaven & Hell, please explain what your job or whatever will be in either place for all eternity?

I'm used to it. Not all that many places in Dixie where pagans can openly gather, let alone established facilities where practicing skyclad is allowable.

Whack job neighbor was informed that we would be building a nudist church on the property (just yanking his chain since I'm not allowed to shoot him). He said he'd move away the day we broke ground for it...

Lisa and I are both ordained clergy...  Wink

I have pics to prove this I swear ... And it may explain why all the religious imagery has been created the way it has been and why its a big deal in the bible belt.

Some time in 2003-04 I took a picture of a huge cloud pattern with an image patern that looked like jesus as portrayed by Charlton Hesston complete with beard and long flowing hair, in the foregound, and in the background above that face was a face that looked an awful lot like the old napster logo albeit with larger horns.

I have never seen clouds like that before I moved to NC.

Cool.

This is a bronze statue of S.Peter in the Vatican Basilica...

WAIT ! NO IT'S NOT !!!  Shocked

THAT is a statue of ZEUS taken from the Pantheon and moved to S.Peters' Basilica !

Huh

The Pantheon was a Roman (=pagan) temple which housed the statues of ALL Deities; it was cleared of the statues, the ones surviving are now in the Vatican Museums.

Only the statue of Zeus was modified by an Italian bronze smelter and placed within the Vatican Basilica.

If you look closely, you wioll realize something is just not right:
- the wallpaper behind the statue is bears exactly the symbology used in Middle Eastern temples  for the god Baal

- the halo on top of St.Peter's head is NOT a halo (should be vertical or slanted) it is a horizontal SUN DISK

- the fingers of the right hand are open in the three-fingered fashion used by Romans and Greeks, not by the Church (who use the open hand) for the blessing of the worshippers

- the statue's legs and feet are slanted as if it were originally sitting on another kind of throne - clearly not the stone chair he is sitting on now.

Huh

The truth of it all, Jesus was either gay, or a large Black woman... When she returns, she will be pissed! The world you are living in NOW is hell..

Who ever our creator is has a warped sense of humor, and has abandoned us, we had better adopt that same humor or we all will be subjected to a real hell on earth, Republican control.. Grin
