Ticking noise from front side of engine
08/27/12 at 22:39:21

The other day I started hearing a ticking noise from the front of my engine. At first I thought it sounded like ignition arcing. It sounds like a noisey fuel injector on a car or something.
The sound may be slightly louder on the left side, or at least it seems that way when I stop at a light.
I also noticed my bike is backfiring a little louder and more frequently than usual on deceleration. I also noticed the backfires sound deeper than usual too.
My bike has a little under 4900miles. It got an oil change and spark plug at 4k.

I'm thinking it may be an exhaust leak at the head, or possibly a valve issue.
Any thoughts?

1/4" ratchet, cold engine, snug exhaust up. Snug is the operative word.
How many miles? When was the last valve adjust?

The two bolts on the head pipe were snug, and I gave them each another quarter turn. I've never had a valve adjustment yet. I was told it wasn't needed till 6k.

Somewhere around 5K miles is the interval for checking and adjusting the valves.  Depending on the oil you use and the operating conditions this interval can be shorter or longer.

My best guess since I can't hear the noise myself is that it's time for a valve adjustment.
