Cable Oiling
08/27/12 at 05:55:38

The LS650 owners' manual recommends lubricating the throttle and clutch cables at 4000 miles and routinely thereafter.  I saw a post of a procedure for oiling the clutch cable but nothing on the throttle cable.  Has anyone ever done this?  Is it really necessary?
Thanks!

I've never done either to my bike. After 160k on my car my throttle cable wasn't snapping back to it's home position and had to break it all down and oil it.
Guess it depends if you're riding dirt with your Savage?

You can do it but remember that the upper end of the clutch cable sees wheather, dirt and all this. The gas cable usually does not.

There is also a rear brake cable, which is not at all easy to get at.

If your bike sits inside when it rains, you don't store your bike outside, and you don't ride in the dirt and dust much.....you can probably oil the cables rarely.  If your bike is outside, ridden in the rain and dirt, then you should oil them occasionaly.

Oldfella posted a way to poke the cable through a hole in a zip lock bag and then secure the hole to the outer cable with tape.....then put some gear oil in the bag and let gravity carry the lube down through the cable.  You can also use the factory cable luber accessories if you have them.

Thanks everyone!  MY bike is street only and does not get wet.  It is outdoors but covered.  It sounds like I could just monitor resistance and lube accordingly...

I've broken a throttle cable before (I was in Gangneung, South Korea, on my 1981 GL1800 Gold Wing).  It was the pull cable that broke.  I ended up swapping in the push cable and it got me back across the country to where I was stationed (at Osan AB).

Since then, I've been a big advocate of lubing throttle cables.....on any bike that has 'em!

This is a relative easy job on the Savage.....
