Makes sense, but how do you know what it's set at when you don't have a tachometer on the bike? I just want to make sure mine is right, but I don't know how to check it. Suggestions? Thanks

Clymer's (known to have at least some errors) suggests 1000 - 1200 rpm idle speed. I think I prefer to err on the high side. That lets a cold engine idle, albeit a bit slower. It helps reduce the afterfire (backfire), and it helps keep oil flow up into the cam bearings. It probably also reduces the tendency of the engine to stall after a quick deceleration from speed.

That's what I do. 1,200 when warm, about 1,000 when cold. Although when I start it cold I keep the throttle so it does about what it does when warm and I keep it there about a minute before taking off.

For not too many bux, you can buy a small, digital tach. I've got one and use it just for diagnostic purposes. After I get my reading, I just disconnect it and throw it back in the drawer......

Works for me!

Can you use a Digital Photo Laser Tachometer Non Contact on a motorcycle, like this one:
