Foot shifter will not move when hot
08/20/12 at 11:46:04

Hello,

I have an 05 s40. When the motorcycle gets hot the lever for the foot lever literally will not move to shift into any gear. Works fine until warmed up. Need help!!

Are you describing a problem with the clutch hand lever, or with the gearshift pedal? While they are used in conjunction with each other, they are separate controls.

There isn't really very much to it. The pedal has a pivot. Put a drop or two of engine oil on that. See if it moves freely by hand (you don't have to actually shift). Put oil on anything else that moves, such as the pivots on the linkage rod.

Check the clutch lever clearance. You can see everything that moves on it - the lever at the top, and the lever on the right rear of the engine. Adjust the cable at either or both ends as needed to get some clearance at the hand lever. There should be about the thickness of a nickel between the lever and its mount - where it pulls the cable - when your hand is off the lever. Put some oil on the pivot, and see if you can run some oil down the cable. That pretty much takes care of everything you can do externally.

With any luck your oil change will take care of anything else. You'll likely catch flak from one member for not having used high-dollar Klotz oil. Most others, including me, will probably suggest Shell Rotella 15W-40 Triple Protection oil. You pays your money, and you makes your choice.

I always use Sea Foam Deep Creep for things that move like that, It cleans it and lubes it.

Be careful to not force it. A bent shifting fork could result, causing some exploratory surgery. And big money.

If ya get horsey with it & get that adjuster rod bent a little, it will flex & eventually break,

Take it off, count turns, straighten it, like any other bent wire, piddle with the shifter without all the linkage on it, see how it feels. Some small channel locks & a rag, maybe some vise grips, see if it works once that rod is off there,

Getting horsey with it is what caused it to bend.  Either you or some one else.
You should never have to tromp on the shifter to make it shift.
If it acts like it won't go into gear, put light pressure on the shifter and ease the clutch out a bit.  It will shift.  Pull in the clutch and ease off on the shifter.
This usually happens when you stop and are in a high gear.
You try to shift down, it won't go, you get anxious and tromp on it.

Even if you do manage to get the rod straight, it won't be as strong as it was and will tend to bend again.  Order up another one, just in case.

People around here that put in forward controls might have one you can get cheap.

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.
