installed my Verslavy..
08/05/12 at 13:34:39

Well, finally got around to installing the Verslavy. I'll send my old cam chain tensioner to Verslagen1 so he can do his magic and send it on to live in another Savage.

My 1998 has 12,875miles on it and the Tensioner was at a hair over 17mm.
Hardest part of the job:
1) Getting the old gasket off..Man! that took me awhile. Finally used an old "shopper reward card" or credit type card as a scraper. Just kept re-trimming an edge of it to keep it sharp. Also sprayed a little brake cleaner in a rag then used that to soak onto bits of gasket still stuck.
2) Didn't have retaining ring pliers...figured I could do it with some tweezers and a small screw driver...struggled with sucker for 30 minutes...then went to Sears and bought a pair for 10 bucks that worked fine...
....So...lesson learned..get something to scrape off the old gasket and some retaining ring pliers before you start and it will knock an hour off the time to do it.

The better lesson to learn is to not glue both sides of a gasket,,
That saves the $$ for a gasket AND the scrapin time,,
Can I get a Yeee Haaa?

Yep..I just wanted to snap a pic of what it looked like before the mod. The picture was about ten minutes after I removed the cover and peeled away a lot of gasket. You can still see a few spots of gasket that was left. They were stubborn little pieces.
When I redid the gasket, I made sure to only use a very little film of glue to hold it in place, then put a little film of grease on the cover to make removal easier next time as others here have suggested.
So far, no leaks or problems. Everything seem good.
I changed the oil  a few weeks ago to Rotella T6 5w40, and after the Verslavy, I did the same complete with another new filter..
...all I can say is "wow". The bike shifts better, clutch is smoother, engine smoother...just runs better then when I got it (of course I don't really know how old the old oil was, as it was pretty black) I'm starting to be a believer in this Rotella oil..thinking of putting it in my Honda and in the wife's Vstar.

Alright, I'll ask:
Why is the inside of the case black?

It's apart of the finishing.
silver ones are silver inside instead of aluminum too.
