Clutch lever getting stiffer
08/05/12 at 09:05:13
Recently my clutch lever at times is stiffer to depress than normal, it's probably increased to about 30% of the time since it first began. The bike is new 2200 miles. Any ideas what might cause this, I'm by no means a bike mechanic.

Yea, lube it,, you mite even disconnect it at the lever going thru the side cover & see how it feels w/o a load. A crescent wrench on the lever, push down, that releases cable tension,.

The lever that the cable goes to, down on the side of the motor. Put a crescent wrench on it, push down,, cable is free.

Just seemed odd it would need it so soon, but maybe the dealer didn't do it at 1000 mile service. Is Motion Pro cable luber the brand of choice?

Invest in a cable luber, the prices ranged from $10-13 at my local independent bike shop. I couldn't tell any difference between them in quality. If you live around sand, you'll want to use a lube that doesn't attract it.
Here is what I use, seems to work well.

The cable lube applier mechanism of choice around here is Zip Lock at a cost of about 4 cents each and the best & longest lasting clutch cable lube we have found is to immersion soak the woven steel inner cable with 80w90 gear oil.
Remember to put a rag under the chrome lever at the other end of the clutch cable, the excess 80w90 gear oil can get messy unless you catch it all on purpose when it starts to drip through (it takes a few hours to soak its way slowly through the woven inner cable down the length of the clutch cable though). Good news is you can lube it in place just dandy, no need to remove anything except up at the top end at the lever.
Use tightly wrapped string or a rubber band to tightly grip the zip lock baggie corner up against the outer shell of the cable, put some of the 80w90 gear oil into the baggie and then zip lock the baggie shut and tie it up high so the cable is "down" to the pool of oil, then let gravity slowly do the rest.

Is there a best way to disconnect the cable at the top? Back off the lock nut and then unscrew the adjuster from the lever?

Binky, there is a slot cut in the aluminum housing and a slot cut in the adjustment knurled knob. Line the two up and simply pop your cable out of the lined up slots.
It helps a lot to take the rubber over boot off the cable junction so you can see what is going on with it .....
