Compression Release Necessary ?
08/03/12 at 06:25:42
I always wondered,.....in warm weather, and with normal compression, and a fully charged OEM battery, and mainly for trouble shooting purposes only, will these engines crank over w/o the compression release operating ?

Yup.
Drained my battery messing with my carb jets last week before I realized the decomp wasn't even attached.

If you could make sure the motor isnt about to start the compression stroke when you hit the Go button, you wouldnt need it anyway, it only fires for a very short time.

Replacement starters seem a little pricey for the LS 650. I wouldn't work the starter any more then I had to, and we should give the Suzuki engineers a little credit, they put it on for a reason.

In my case, I tried to start the engine a few times without the lever working, less than half of them the engine run appropriately, most cases I heard the starter fighting hard trying to turn it over, to the point it stopped moving, really bad for the wiring, the starter and the battery.
I got the compression solenoid wire to a kill switch on the handlebar, I use it to start and to kill the engine (86 LS with no torque limiter gear), thinking seriously about making a foot lever (something similar to the RYCA one)

Battery life without the decomp solenoid working is 3 months. I killed 3 batteries in one year. Bike has been parked since. Just now getting around to fabbing up a manual release since the bike is almost ready to put back together.
