Confusion about pre 2005 pillion vs post 2005
07/31/12 at 16:34:59
While conversing with green monster on his post about finding a pre 2005 luggage rack in the Marketplace a mystery has evolved. As Greenmonster told me, the pillion handle changed in 2005. Yet, my wifes 2008 has the same pillion as my 1987?? When I look at micro fiche on oem parts sites, the part #'s are indeed different 2005 and later. And the pillion on my wife's bike is not even listed. But her bike is bone stock and there it is. So, does this mean that if I bought a luggage rack for a post 2005 that it would not fit the wife's 2008? Is her bike one of a kind? Any help with this mystery will be greatly appreciated.

My initial thoughts are someone put the older style pillions on your wife's bike for the back rest as the newer ones did not come with one.

We bought this from the original owner with 208 miles on it bone stock. Just google 06's 07's 08's images and you will see plenty with the "old style" pillion. It's hard to believe they are all modified? It's confusing.

Then my thoughts can be ignored!
I really don't know then. I am sure an old timer will have the answer.

Thanks for the input Greg! Check out the Corbin site
http://www.corbin.com/suzuki/ss40.shtml
It shows a luggage rack for post 05 ls650's mounted to a stock pillion. IMHO These bikes must have been available with and without backrest?

the luggage rack on the Corbin website is not the OEM rack. In fact, I'm really not sure were that rack came from I'd love to know though since it's almost exactly what I'm looking for.

Hey Greenmonster, check out this site:
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/custom-world-international-adjustable-round...
Probably not what you are looking for but it is a luggage rack?
Or this one:
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/custom-world-international-standard-luggage...
Nice looking but you would have to use their sissybar.
Or this:
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/custom-world-international-voyageur-luggage...
I bet a couple of those could be mounted to the stock backrest with a little ingenuity.

The sissybar rails, bars, etc. are all the same. The difference between them? The covering of the foam is different... The S40 models are ribbed like the seat cover.
The measurements are all the same though... So a luggage rack that fits the early years should work with 08+ as well.
The S40 will typically come with non sissybar rails, they are just straight, flat rails. The sissybar was an option that could be added, which is maybe what this person did from the dealer.
Hope that helps.

I would love to find the little pad that goes on the bar, I am so not going to pay such a high price for one, the other option is to simply remove the fender rails, rear seat, and bar. Then, Ia challenge arises; how do I hide the hardware and mounting holes.....something to ponder I suppose but, here she is so far. TADA

Ralfguy, Those bags came with the bike. We bought it from the original owner with 208 miles. I think they are stock? The bike was originally purchased at Cycle wise Inc., New Haven, Vermont

The sissy bars are the same,( I think) the rails are not. '05 and up have a rail that is 1/4" thicker than pre '05, and require 1/4" longer bolts. Also there is a small locating pin on the newer ones that fit in a grometted hole in the fender. This hole is not present in pre '05 bikes.
That said it is easy to mount pre '05 rails on a newer bike, all you need is shorter bolts, I have done this myself. To mount newer rails on an older bike you would need longer bolts and to remove the locating pin from the rails.
