Looking for a luggage rack?
07/30/12 at 22:29:57

Is anyone else having a heck of a time trying to find as luggage rack for a pre 2005 bike?

If you have one, where did you get it? Do you want to sell it?

I'm starting to think about making them...

Hey Greenmonster, just out of curiosity, what is different about the pre 2005 bikes? I have an 87 and would like to find a luggage rack. The bikes look the same. Huh

From what I've been able to determine (Feel free to correct me if I've been misled) about the time when they changed from a two part seat to the one that it is now, the rails changed and sissybar changed just enough that the luggage racks don't fasten in the same locations any more.

Greenmonster, this whole subject has me puzzled. My wifes bike is  a 2007 and is equipped with the same pillion as my 87. I am going to post a question in Rubberside down and try to get additional input on it.

Update greenmonster: Your post got me to researching. It would appear that the 05's and above were equipped with or without backrest (pillion). Google 06,07,08 images, it's about 25% with - 75% without. Also check out Corbins website http://www.corbin.com/suzuki/ss40.shtml  they show a luggage rack mounted on a pre 05 AND a post 05. The luggage racks are different, but both are mounted to a stock backrest (pillion). Hope that helps.  Smiley

Hi green,

Went through this thrash several years ago (my bike is in my signature block).

Started out with the rack sold by Suzuki.  It is a little chromed number that I found to be flimsy.  The welds kept breaking.  I gave up in disgust and bought one made be a member here (seviersavage).  That one, although stouter than the Suzuki rack, also suffered some weld failures.  I did some mods to it and it is working great now....I'm very pleased with it.

My Savage is my "daily rider" and, since I don't own a cage, I need some utility capability from the bike.  Without a decent luggage rack, my Savage would not be very useful for me.

Here is the pertinent thread:

IHTH!

I still think you went too easy on seviersavage, selling you a rack with obviously cold welds (bad penetration).

That's an engineer for you.  Finds a durable solution to fix the defect and doesn't complain that the thing broke in the first place..
