Posts: 249 Maine Gender:	To seal or not to seal 07/29/12 at 17:26:38 I believe it was on this forum that I read not to use gasket cement or ultra grey on the engine side covers. Would like to get some feedback. I am rebuilding my 87 engine w/ 17000 miles, and I would like to hear some opinions on sealant or no sealant and why. Thanks in advance.

I don't use any sealant on gaskets. The gasket "is" the sealant.

I have a friend that has raced Ducati's, and he uses a product called Hylomar on one side of the gasket. It is a non-hardening sealer and it prevents the gasket from bonding to the metal - so the part can be removed without damaging the gasket. (Hylomar is hard to find, and I have never used it.)

I used sealer like suntan lotion--rubbed it in--not globs.

Sealer as in silicone - usually its not much of an issue, however the savage oil passage goes through the wall of the right side case. If you "close" that with errant sealant, you wont get oil to the head.
I've used sealant on many bikes and cars, and ironicaly my chrysler lebaron transmission leaks the least oil with only silicone and no gasket. I use permatex purple stuff on everything, even had some on my cereal this morning. Carbs, engine covers, everything has it. However that isn't silicone, its more like gasket glue. It stays liquid, never hardens.

Srinath. Hey Srinath, Are you talking about the Purple Permatex thread locker? Or the flange sealant? I've never used the purple. Always use the ultra grey, but I like to try new stuff if it works good.
