Required Battery Output?
07/26/12 at 09:18:37

There is probably a thread where this question is tackled and answered but i didnt want to dig through 599 pages of threads in the RSD.

So im looking into buying a new smaller more powerfull battery! to save on space and on weight. I have been looking at a couple different types of batteries like lithium, agm, lead/acid. I find my self so lost when looking at all the different types and sizes.

What number of volts and cranking amps and cold cranking amps do i need? can i use any battery that meets these requirements? im looking for a small maintenence free battery. any recommendations?

There will be charging problems with a lithium,... someone smart will explain why,... but for now, it ain't good..

With batteries, size matters.... how small you can go, will depend on how easy and often you start yer' bike...

Best bet is to by a black battery,.. 'cause black is always slimming...
It will appear smaller... Huh...

You could buy a Shorai new style which is very small and light but also expensive.  Not ready to jump into that new tech yet so I got an Odyssey PC310 which is also small, not so light, and also expensive.  But have had Odyssey batteries in all of my bikes for years and they always last at least 4 or 5 years and never have let me down on the road.

Still waiting for somebody smart...
They posted an explanation a while back... and I believed it...
Something about charging...

I'm into lightening the bike too,... but those are 6 very expensive pounds...

I got lighter fender, muffler,.. ditched beltguard, head covers, rear seat, etc... even Shinko tires that are lighter that other brands..
.. but 80 to 100 bucks for 6 lbs?... too pricey fer me... Huh...

If it was 80 - 100 bucks for some of thes batteries ive been looking at i would of bought the first one that said its capable of starting a bigger engine then mine! all the ones ive been are minimum 175 - 200 one of them was 500!  Shocked  i guess my main concern is buying a battery that has too much power and will short out or melt a wire ( if thats possible  Undecided ) or a battery that requires a strict amount of current to charge it or it will die. its just hard to figure out if i need a 4, 8, 12, 24 cell battery or soemthing completly different.

if someone can just tell me that i wont fry my whole electrical system by using the wrong battery then that would be awesome! or if people can recommend a small battery that they have used succesfully i dont care if it wieghs more then darn stock battery i just want it to be smaller!

According to what I have read, ballistic batteries are lithium batteries that do not require any modification to our charging system

something done before....

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1259644714

BigCrank is a battery I can recommend.
They sell various sizes
You'll have to pick a size for your use.
You plan on using accessories?  Don't do it.
You don't go very far between stops?  Don't do it.
Can't push start?  Don't do it.

For a standard commuter with a minimum 30 minute ride at superslab speeds, you can down size your battery as it's going to be charged with every use.
If you are going to be a delivery boy with dozens of stops and 5 miles inbetween each stop, no way are you going to keep it charged and you might not last the day.

Our #15 battery has
•      12 Volt, 14 Ah, 220 CCA
•      5.25"L X 3.50"W X 6.56"H

Next size down is a #12

•      12 Volt, 10 Ah, 180 CCA
•      5.88"L X 3.44"W X 5.13"H

Still smaller is a #9
•      12 Volt, 8 Ah, 120 CCA
•      5.88"L X 3.44"W X 4.19"H

then even smaller are the LiFePo batteries (don't go less the 8 cells)
BM Part #:      LFX12A1-BS12
Capacity:      12 Ah / 155 CCA
Length:      5.83"
Width:      2.60"
Height:      4.13"
