New Thumper Owner

I just bought a 87 Savage with 3800 miles on it.  Overall it is in really good shape, but it needs a new front brake caliper and a starter.  I picked it up for $900, which I thought was a pretty good buy.

I was really happy to find this site, I have already spent quite a few hours reading and learning about my Thumper.  Any advise would be greatly appreciated!  I am not only a newbie to this site, but I am not much of a mechanic.  I do, however, plan to take care of the bike myself, and I am planning a complete restoration this winter.

Both the front brake caliper and the starter itself can be rebuilt.

Why do you say bad starter?   Has somebody busted up the starter gears and/or damaged the cases due to a kickback (it is an 87 after all) ?

Before you go much further, take off the left hand side cover and check your starter gears and pins and case holes for busted up pin holes/case cracks etc.

Reason to do this first is simple, if you got busted cases you need to stop and consider if you got defrauded by someone who knowingly and intentionally dumped an economically unrepairable bike on you simply because you didn't know any better.

If the cases are still sound, busted gears & pins can be replaced.

Welcome, and don't forget "The Marketplace". Since we don't go there a lot, some of us post our wants in the cafe. But don't tell anyone I said that. Also a bad starter can sometimes be rebuilt. I've had auto starter places rebuild mine for other bikes in the past for about $50. But like the guys say...it depends on what's wrong.

The starter had one of the magnets inside of the case broken loose.  Don't know how that could have happened, but the local starter guy said he could fix it.  I'm supposed to pick it up this afternoon.   I bought a caliper on EBay for $30.  Now all I need is a battery side cover.
