rear fender mounting?
07/15/12 at 17:35:05

I ordered a rear fender for my bobber project from northern tool because i heard from a couple people that they work great for the savage. I was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion on how to go about mounting it. Thanks

Pretty simple.Get a manilla envelope and make a template of the bolt holes, usually from inside the rear fender.Mark about where they are when you mock up the new fender. If still using suspension leave enough room between the fender and the swingarm for the swingarm to pivot.Center your template and drill.Cut out for belt too.

I usually use chrome(about)half inch spacers between the fender and frame.

If you look close you can see them.

Which fender are ya'll buying for modding to the the Savage?? I'd like to do one that has more coverage then the stock fender, kinda like the bagger HD's were it goes about half way down the rear of the tire.

I got mine from northerntool.com. They are actually trailer fenders but I heard from alot of people that they work great for the savage rear fender. They also are pretty easy to mount according to the posts.

RF, you thinking more along these lines....?

Shovelhead FLH rear fender, held on via a 7" side mount headlight bracket. You can get the bracket at any shop that carries Custom Chrome brand parts, you may need to look in the Jammer's Handbook.

The chrome thing you can see (barely) between the seat and the bags is the fender bracket. Bolts on the frame, fender bolts inside the bracket. You'll need to make a set of lower spacers/mounts or use the tail pipe as the rear brace (VN800 reflector bracket).

You could use a hinged rear fender but you'll need to make some structural side rails to tie into the main frame cradle.

If you want the full fender to pivot, a couple brackets on the swingarm, rods mounted to the fender, use the headlight bracket as above.

You guys building bobbers... you can get a "Fat Bob" type trailer fender as well... about $30 at Tractor Supply.

Sure thing. No sense re-engineering something that has worked on mine for, geez, where'd the time go, 5 years or so.

Keep in mind that Demin has hard tailed his bike by removing the springs... If you mount the fender like he has and still have springs, make sure you have enough room for the fender to move without hitting the tire over bumps.

I had the same dilemma with my trailer fender, so I ordered the Blue Collar Bobbers rear fender and planned on making my own mounts.... And then gave up and just bought their whole kit.

I can't speak enough about the quality of their kit (although slightly more expensive than just a trailer fender and some bolts):

I really like that color.  Do you know what it is?  I was thinking about going a deep purple with mine, maybe something a little darker than yours, but just curious.  Cool
