I have opened my '87 engine for inspection, so far it looks pretty sweet. the odometer reads +25k miles, the cam chain plunger is at 11 mm measured on plunger shaft. How long until I should be worried about plunger problems e.g plunger falling out?

a rough low ball estimate is 1000 miles per 1mm.
you're at 11mm, gotta do something at 17mm, so 6k miles, maybe 12k

Sweet!  Grin everything is looking rather clean and smooth inside the old engine (have only taken the covers off- stator and clutch) I don't think I need to look further inside, was initially worried cam chain was in trouble. Time to get her back together.
