Ballistic performace EVO2 4cell Battery
07/05/12 at 14:28:02

Is mostly a fail. It worked for about 1 week, caused hard cold starts, really hard starts. Makes you think the motor will not kick over before the decompression kicks in. Finally up and died on me today, won't kick over the engine even with charging.

I got about 5-7 good starts another 10 weak starts with multiple trys and then about 5 no starts and kaput.

Anyone want a slightly used 4cell battery $50 shipped in original box. Smiley

You mite try Craigs list,,Im not seein any takers here,,

You know, every now & then someone tries something new, kinda radical & it works out,, sometimes, its just a bust,,Bummer this one cost ya so much,
What was the goal? TRying for a discrete battery installation to clear up some room on the bike? I think there have been a coupla brave souls who have done that. I cant remember what battery they went with. If I was gonna do that, Id want either a manual decomp or an electrical over ride so I could hold the exhaust valve open long enough to really l;et the starter get that engine rollin before I let it hit the compression stroke, & that just mite not get it, either,, if it didnt fire rite off, youd need to hit the decomp again & let it get another run at it, I thot about the smaller battery & all,, but the hassles seemed to ouweigh any potential feeling of sense of accomplishment I mite get,, so, I stuck with stock stuff.,.
Whats your next plan of attack? Gonna see if you can find a better Mini or you goin stock lead/acid or Glass Mat?

What was the rated voltage for the 4 cell battery?   I ask because a 4 cell battery would have to produce 3V per cell.  The materials used in cells define their voltage.  For instance, a zinc-carbon cell is about 1.5V, a lithium-manganese cell is about 3V, lead-dioxide (lead-acid) is about 2.1V, and so on.

just bought one of those YTZ7S batteries as those seem to do well for people, The Evo 4 cell just didn't seem to have enough to kick the starter over and fire the plug together for a good solid start. Stock batt hits it on the first roll over.

If the YTZ7S wont do it either I will just go with a big crank Sad we will see.

Those batts are a lithium type battery, not sure exactly on the makeup but according to their website the full charge voltage is 13.6v  so nominal is most likely around 3v so similar to a LifePo4 or lithium-manganese.   They also don't recommend the 4 cell for bigger then 350cc single jugs, but aside from that pretty much any lithium type battery will only work satisfactory in temps above 50F as a starting batt, anything below that they just simply will not be able to hold the charge or supply the current needed.

These should be A123 cells and the pack is good for 13.2v
the problem is they are only rated for 2.3 amp hrs

Hmmm... Not liking the sound of this.
I got one of them 4cell batteries just to try it, but haven't gotten my stalled out project on the road yet, so I haven't had any experience with it.

I was skeptical; figured it would be minimal but looked to me on paper like it should do the job....
I wanted to locate the battery in that canister-shelf-exhaust-bracket thing below the swingarm pivot. It looks like their 6-cell battery would fit there nicely; any thoughts guys on how that one might compare?

I was originally planning to use the YTZ7S, as in the thread from the Tech section; maybe I should ditch my EVO and go back to plan "A"?

Honestly, I'm really surprised the 4-cell worked at all. Even the 8-cell isn't rated for an engine this big, especially not a single. And that battery is garbage now, you've surely over-heated the crap out of it and drained it too far below it's discharge voltage. Now that battery is just a hazard and will eventually start expanding in size and then burst. I can't believe you'd really try selling this.

Voltage test out fine, and as far as I know it never overheated, always cool to the touch. But you might be right it might be totaly dead.

I haven't retried it since doing a 6am 12volt recharge on it.
