It's not so much different than the past. I remember the days in the 1960's, where we as kids rode bikes that only had a rear foot brake and single speed. Then my parents got me a Japanese 26-inch 3 speed bike with rear dérailleur and front/rear hand brakes. We didn't use helmets or reflective vests. I was in tall cotton. I think today we are too much an overly protective society. Grin

I still remember my first ride on a bike with hand brakes. Down the hill I went,, & as the little creek came up fast, I shoved down on the back pedal, hard, & it didnt stop, it didnt slow down ( Bike Or pedal),, the pedal came around & Smashed into my shin , I was half off the seat from the pedal going out from under my foot, then I hit the creek,, it wasnt glorious,, but it was memorable!
