Newbie here/ 87 bobber build
06/26/12 at 18:38:58

First off want to say hi to everyone and introduce myself. I am new to these savages, but not new to bikes and cars. I currently got a 90 bmw 535i as my daily beater, and got a 54 chevy that I bagged, also got a 51 chevy pickup as my fiances project, and last but not least just picked up this 87 savage for 550bucks because of leaky fork seals and the engine lost power all of a sudden.
I figured what the hell and bought it. I quickly started tearing into it The plans for this bike is like all the other ones, stripped down functional bobber. the first thing I did was strip it down to the bare frame as started to see what,i need/didnt. I wanted to keep the stock tank, solo seat, mini rear fender, no front fender, no front brakes for that clean old school look. I also decided to make this bike a hard tail like all the other bikes I have owned/built in the past and made some solid struts for it. Next I kicked off the loose and rusty muffler it had on it and added a straight pipe on. Now I had read how bad these bikes ran with straight pipes so I made a baffle for it out of a lage flat washer that fit inside the pipe and put some steel wool to keep the noise down a bit and also help create a little back pressure. Added a cone filter too while I was at it. Now I need to rejet it.  I also replaced the front seals and added new fork oil. Also replaced the petcock with with, the raptor petcock. Next thing was to clean up the wiring. next I jumped to the wiring. I extended all,the wiring to hide it,in my stash tube under my seat. Also why I was at it removed/relocated my controls on my left side handle bar. Relocated my,headlight switch to the headlight, and mounted my turnsignal and horn button under the left side tank also made a set of drag bars and some 10in z bars. For the rear fender I got a rear fender off of like a 70/80's suzuki, from a friends bone yard. Cut it down and vuala!
Now to paint. original plan was to paint the bike a burnt copper & call it done buuut a friend egged me on to flake out the paint so we added the flake.
Thats where we ran into problems. The clear he had reacted with the paint I had and we had to start AALLL over again. This, time we used some left over paint he had which was called orange effect. We also flaked out this color and we were both waaay happier with the color.
And this is where I am at now. im at the engine part of the build the engine was knocking a bit but havent gotten to it yet. I guess im at the point where I have to open it up. That is why I ended up here lol. I hope I can get this bike running soon I will post pics soons when I get the chance. I hope I can help u all out and can learn from you all as well!

Thanks,
Chriz.

Sounds like a nice transformation. Looking forward to some pictures of the cleaned up controls and wiring... That's a future project for my bobber build too.

Little concerned about the front brake, as that provides a lot more braking power than the rear.... But whatever makes you happy. Smiley

New fender cut, welded shut, primed & mocked up. With mini turn signals added

Bike mocked up as a whole

Frame painted/engine painted/forks painted & rebuilt with first color on rear fender

Engine fins polished up for a little bling

Not bad. Can't wait to see it finished up. Love the color.

Rear fender said Suzuki on the dealer sticker, but it looks like an XS650 unit. Have one in my stash.

When I still ran a stock tank I finished the seam off with edge molding. Something unfinished looking about the stock tanks.

Z-bars all the way man...

You're at about the same stage I am on mine. Waiting on the rear fender to be finished (but since I'm painting mine...)...

I never should have started repainting mine... was a nice pearl burnt copper...

THat bike looked good for an '87, someone took real good care of her. But, now she looks badda$$. Great job on everything. Personally I like the low look of the drag bars much better than the mini apes or z bars.

Thanks guys, it was a little beat up and neglected but all it needed was a little tcl, grinder, a welder, and some paint and it has made a world of a difference  Grin

On the bars I am torn between the 2 lol I have always used drags on everything but wanred to mix it up a bit on this build.  But I got both bars so I can mix it up when ever I feel like it. Wink

Where'd you get that fender?

A little off-topic, that an E34 in the background? Have you got any more pics of that?
