wambr, if you find you do need a new petcock, the manual Yamaha petcock can be changed without removing the tank. The Yamaha part number is 5LP-24500-01-00. You also have to plug or cap the vacuum nipple on the right side of the carburetor.

thank you! replacing the fuel valve is not problem. I first try to find the reason and correct the stok fuel shut-off valve.

Newbie question incoming:
If the fuel in the oil test ends up positive, (haven't tried it yet, but curious) is that a petcock issue?  Or something worse?

IF you have a manual petcock and fuel is in the oil, it will be the float sinking in the bowl or trash holding the float needle open when the engine is off. The little bowl on the bottom of the carburetor contains the float which regulates the opening of the needle and gives more gas as needed or less if not. Sorry to be so elementary, but some don't understand this.

Just my 2 cents. I was given a '87 Savage last year from my brother who told me he dealt with fuel issues for a long time (stalling at lights, inconsistant idle). He changed the diaphram in the petcock right before I got the bike. I actually had gas pissing out the carb vents while bike was sitting idling on the kickstand. I found this site and took the advice of many and changed the petcock to the raptor. There are no problems swapping it out and have not had a fuel issue since. Cost about $20.00.  I'm a believer.

Will have to check this tonight, seeing as I just drained the oil.  Ordered a raptor over the weekend as a "just in case" fix. So that may work out.
