LS650 real weight -- how to weigh it
06/25/12 at 05:24:56

This may not deserve a seperate topic in this section - but I was loading up my trailer and was curious what the Savage weighed in real life....not necessarily the claimed weight.  I took a bathroom scale and a block of wood the same height as the scale.  I weighed each end with one end on the scale and the other on the block of wood so the bike would remain level and the weight would not shift from one end of the bike to the other as I moved the scale. With about 3/4 gallon of fuel in the tank the rear of the bike weighed 200.2 pounds, and the front weighed 158.5.  The total weight was 358.6 pounds.  (This goes a long way toward explaining why it feels heavy to me....I also weighed my Sherco trials bike and it weighed 83 pounds on the front wheel and 83.2 pounds on the rear wheel.......166.2 pounds total!).

Maybe find a local recycling center with one of those drive on scales? Your numbers sound pretty decent though.

Or you local truck stop.  They don't charge much for weighing ya on the scales.

I wanted to know which end of the bike was heavier and where the center of gravity might be - so I would know how to distribute the weight in the trailer to keep tongue weight where it should be.

I bet the accuracy of my bathroom scale and a wood block is just as accurate as a truck scale designed to weigh 72,000+ pound trucks!  My 358 pound bike is only 0.5% of what the 72,000 pound truck weighs.

Actually you would be surprised.  D.O.T. certified scales have to be accurate regardless of the weight of the object being weighed. The scales do weigh down to the single pound accuracy and DOT mandates that it has to be within a very tight tolerance to be a certified scale.  I tried one once that was at one of the local yards that was certified and it was accurate on my weight with just me standing on it.

Another option, if you live anywhere near a dirt track racing community or other type of racing community most of the track shops have corner wheel scales and will probably weigh your bike for ya either for free, or next to nothing, with both you on it, and off it.
