Headlight flickers... dims?
06/23/12 at 20:57:49
Riding tonight I noticed the bike headlight sort of dimming and brightening in rapid succession as I rode.
Time to look into the wiring, I need to replace the back left taillight in any case.
I'll keep you guys updated!

Kinda my thoughts too Gary!!!!
Seems I remember carrying a flashlight with me on the old Trumpets and Beezers and I'd turn it on at STOP signs and traffic lights so people could see me

I had this issue and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
Then my buddies notices a blue spark coming from the batt box when I hit the starter.
Turns out it was just loose terminal screws on the battery. I tightened the screws down... from there on out my headlight shined forward illuminating every deer and doucher about to run out in front of me from the side of the road.
I hope your problem is as simple, worth a check. Good luck!

Thanks Gary. Not to change the subject of the thread, but I have spent the last several decades trying not to think about my first car, a well used 1958 Triumph TR3A, complete with Lucas electrics. The thing would short out it if the humidity in Peru was over 5% or if someone spit in the road ahead of it. Anyway, I did learn one good joke from the experiemce...Why do the British drink warm beer?....because they have Lucas refrigerators!

Thanks guys!
I'll check the terminals, Wake, thanks for the head's up. I did just replace the battery a few weeks ago.

It's the charging system. There's either a bad connection between the alternator/stator and the rectifier or the rectifier is going bad. I don't have any experience with this particular system but if the wiring is as finnicky as these guys have stated, I'd start checking connections. Unplug and then replug-in every connector. If the pulsation stops, it was just a poor connection.
What causes the system to pulsate is typically a bad connection on the excitation wire. The excitation wire is basically what tells the charging system to activate and begin supplying current to charge the battery and power the electrical system. If the connection is loose, the system will turn on/off over and over again and this is what's seen in the pulsation. You're seeing the jumping from full charging voltage which is around 14v to the battery voltage which is under 13v.
You'll have to ask these guys where the plugs for this are seeing as I don't have a clue.

Yep, loose negative...
It was wedged against the battery box so when i was sitting still it seemed fine, but when i moved, the vibration was shaking it and it was loose.
Tightened it down and no problems since!
Thanks everyone!

Make sure the +pos side isn't wedged or cramped in a similar fashion. If it scrapes around under pressure and wears thru the insulation, it's not only lights out, it's MOTOR out, because the battery +12V will short to ground! Of course, Murphy's law dictates that this will not occur until you are on a twisty mountain road at night, negotiating a sharp turn around a 500 foot crevasse.
