Starting Problem- VIDEO INCLUDED
06/22/12 at 12:25:39

I've been having some starting problems lately. Its weird, because it'll start just about perfectly the first time i try to start it. But if i shut it off and try again then it won't start at all.
After waiting a couple minutes, I'm able to start it back up normally.

Attached is a video of the problem I'm having. Take a look and help me out!

How long do you have to run it to make this happen? Start, run for 20 seconds, kill & wont start?

Have you measured the voltage on your battery, looks to me that is going down when the starter is pressed, maybe after sitting a couple of minutes it recovers some energy and it is able to start the engine

It is either a discharged battery, or bad battery, or a battery/starter connection.
Your bike does not have the headlite cutout while starting, that much more the reason it needs a full charged battery to start.
The dead give away is the headlite dimming down to about 8 volts.
This bikes ignition needs at least 10.5 volts to start,.....and thats while it is cranking. Yours is hardly even cranking.

Run it for a few minutes, on half choke or else itll die too.
And the voltage of my battery while the bike is off reads at just over 12v.
13.3v while running

Measure the battery while cranking, pretty sure it is going below 10V

Surely looks/sounds like a battery problem to me as well. Have you double checked your connections to make sure they are tight? Also, have you checked the ground connection by the oil sight glass to make sure it is getting a good tight connection too?

All Connections are tight, that what i thought the problem was and cleaned and tightened all of the connections. I'll go test it while it cranks right now.

Did you know that a standing voltage of 12.0 volts is a "dead battery"

A good battery must have a standing voltage of at least 12.5

A new battery will stand at 12.7-8

A 5 yr old battery (like mine) mite stand at 12.4, and still start the bike w/ the headlite cutout. But all batteries are different, and not dependable if they don't stand at 12.5-6

Yup, the battery read at 9.89 while cranking the first time, and went down to 7 the second time

It does sound like your charging system could be working correctly at 12.3 on a sick battery. You can expect the voltage to be higher on a full charged battery, possibly 13.7. As battery voltage goes up, so does charging voltage.

I've heard a lot here about the Big Crank battery, also I have read some about the Ballistic batteries, but no personal experience, the experts are about to chime in with recommendations!

Someday will be trying the Ballistic, but not soon (I hope) Wink
