The only input I can think of is that for the foam filters like that, when they are oiled it can be messy. The surface will be sticky and oily and usually is saturated enough to drip.

That kind is common in dirt bikes where you dont care if its messy and is usually contained within an airbox of some sort.

Also, I believe water can pass through a foam filter pretty easily.
