"Savage" was used prior to 2005... renamed "S40" since.  But they are all LS650.

But to answer your question, your 1996 would be an LS650 Savage.  My 2006 is an LS650 S40.

Yup.  Savage is a marketing name like Intruder or Marauder.  The all got "rebadged" as Boulevards and use either an S, C or M along with the displacement in cubic inches.

I read someplace where they defined the prefix initial as such:

S=Sporty
C=Cruiser
M=Muscle

I don't recall the source and can't couch for its accuracy but they sort of made some sense.

I'd heard somewhere the "S" stands for "skinny", as in skinny front tire, skinny fenders, etc.  Not sure about the accuracy of that either though. Huh

The whole thing is pretty skinny. The first time I got on my brothers' Vulcan 900 after learning to ride on the Savage, I felt like I was straddling a 55 gallon drum or something! Shocked

Miserable

Wink

Although truth be told, I wouldn't turn down a C50T or C90T. Couldn't give me any variant of VS, I've demo'd 800s and 1400s, old and new. I'm too tall for them. So The S50 and whatever the big guy is the S stands for squished... Grin
