How to loosen rotor bolt? RH or LH threads?
06/19/12 at 16:22:14

Clymers, in Rotor Removal/Installation in the Electrical System chapter, says to use a 36mm offset wrench to hold onto the flats of the rotor and then loosen, but do not remove the 17mm rotor bolt. (This is the very bolt that is accessed through the circular inspection port on the left side cover during a valve adjustment.)

Racheting socket - no go.
17mm wrench with ball peen tapping - no go.
Breaker bar and 17mm socket - no go.
Electric impact wrench - no go.

Next idea is to heat the bolt with a propane torch.
Clymers says to use Red Loctite when installing the bolt on re-assembly.
Maybe the factory does the same or equivalent?

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Oh, hell! Yes, I've been going counterclockwise on it. Clymer's doesn't say anything about it being left-handed, neither in the removal nor installation descriptions.

Thank you, very much, Serowbot. I'll try going the correct (clockwise to loosen) direction on this LH bolt.

I'll suggest adding this to the Suzuki/Clymer's Manual Errors link in the Technical Documents/Reference section.

How tight did ya want that?

Is it left or right hand threads?  INside an engine,

If it spins clockwise in use, left hand thread is common,

Can you See any threads sticking out? If they go In & to your Left, its left hand thread.

Unless you KNOw the design, dont think ya know.,

I believe the rotor bolt rotates CCW during engine operation. That's the way that bolt is rotated to get TDC during a valve adjustment.

No threads are visible.

Dang,, thats odd,..,
But, The crank does spin so the forward edge goes down,( cam chain is tight on the forward edge) Im glad Ive never had to pull the rotor,, cuz I would shafted myself. Ehh, maybe not, Im pretty big on that Suzuki shop manual. I look at everything before I walk off in it.,

Yeah, my faith in Clymer's is slipping. Maybe I should spring for the SSM (Suzuki Shop Manual) as I'm about to split cases and rebuild a transmission -- both for the first time.

You are a brave man,
Work area prep & disassembly in a planned manner, laying parts down in order, paying close attention to which side faces out, or in, as long as you stick with the same approach.
Some like their music while they work, I dont, I want to concentrate & I want to hear anything that hits the ( clean) floor.

Good advice, thanks. I'll keep the Forum posted as I make the attempt. No doubt asking for advice along the way. This Forum is really a valuable resource.

you'll need a flywheel puller when you get that bolt off.

Justin, it is for the same reason old Mopars had reverse threads on the driver side wheels. So the bolt will tighten with normal use instead of backing out (slim chance on counter-balanced metric engines). Old superstition based on pre-WW2 metallurgy, when threads were a bit on the iffy/soft side.

They do fall out of HDs.
