Just start at the place you want it to stop, wrap a few turns with the overlap you want, mark where you wrapped to,mark the wrap, unwrap it, see how much coverage you got out of the wrap & see if that amount of wrap at that amount of overlap will cover it. Or, get anything that is the same width as the wrap is & play with it, see how much you have to have,m

The stock header can be done with a 50' roll of 1 inch or a 25' roll of 2 inch, with a bit left over in both cases. Lots of brands also have a couple of black lines stitched in to serve as guides for the amount of overlap you should use; cover one, see the other.

And, as JOG said, start from the rear of the pipes; the overlap needs to flow with the wind instead of against it. Also consider soaking the wrap first; you can get a really tight wrap with the material wet.

and by that i mean this has been a hottly debated topic on these forums.

technically speaking, for *other* vehicles, there are benefits such as keeping heat in the headers (and off other components) and having exhaust gasses move faster out of the pipe. on the savage, the only real "benefit" you get is it is harder to burn yourself on the pipe. which i've done a dozen times.

the trade off, as i'm sure a lot of people will be quick to tell you, is that exhaust wrap, if stored outside can hold in moisture speeding up rusting of your header.

on any engine that uses individual pipes per cyl from the head to tail with no interconnection with other cyls there is no performance difference. In engines that are multi cyl that use a header with a common collector that's where the extra exhaust velocity helps some, as it helps in scavenging the cyls. On single pipe per about all it does is give added insulation from the header pipe heating/burning things up near it, and of course looks if you like the wrapped look.
