New owner, exhaust questions
06/09/12 at 18:44:59

I bought a 2002 savage that was not running. Cleaned up the carb and emptied all of the gas out of the crank case, fixed the stuck float and fixed the stuck petcock (hence gas in crank case).

The bike came with a super trap megaphone exhaust and the sound it creates isn't really my style. So I'm looking for a stock setup. I see anythin from 95 to 2011 systems and mufflers for sale but havent seen a 2002 yet.  My question is what model years will be bolt on compatible?  Also anyone want to buy a super clap I mean super trapp muffler? Thanks guys!  - Jason

Post some photos of your Supertrapp; I'm sure lots of folks here would trade you for their stock pipe!! I would, but I have my exhaust sorted out.

Before you get rid of it though; you do realize that you can tune those Surpertrapp pipes and change the sound. Probably quiet it down quite a bit depending on how it's set up now.

Also; if your carb has been re-jetted to work with that pipe, you may need to address that also if you switch back.

Jason, I have a stock '01 muffler and heat shield you can have for freight. Not perfect, but very good. Baffles are lost. You would have to buy or make some. PM if you want it.

How do the baffles come out of a stock muffler ? Just curious.

I just got back in town, so sorry about the delayed reply.  I took a picture of the exhaust.  I'm vaguely familiar with Suppertrapp and it appears I don't have any discs installed at all, hence the massive sound.

Good to know that all years are compatible with my bike.  I'll check out my options on ebay soon.

Here is a picture of my bikes exhaust.

Mmkay,, its missin the disks & cap.. Are there any threaded parts back there to run a screw into? If not, can you JB weld some nuts in there lined up on the holes? If so, wait, get some disks, Im running 14, but you can get 2 packs of 6.. Heck,, do they all have caps or do they just have diskis? Im pooped & cant remember & dont wanna walk to the shop..
Anyway,, disks come with SS bolts, IIRC..
Even if you have to take it & have nuts welded on & shim to the first disk,,
OHH, Wait! A piece of 3/16ths stainless with a hole in it to match the ID, threaded, welded up there & shazzam,,

Yeah, you've lost three of the inserts, and the other three don't look so good.  replacement core is about $100 and disks and cap will run another $50 I think.

If the shell ain't scraped up, I could use it to replace the one in my F250 encounter.

If I could spend $150 or less to make this system work I'd be all for that because it seems a used stock muffler is about that much or more from fleabay. I guess I need to look into finding discs and an 'insert', what is an 'insert' anyways?
