Hi there, just wanted to let you know I sent an email about your cam since I can't PM yet. When I contacted Versy earlier it went into his junk folder for some reason, hence this heads up.

Thanks! Forest

So, I have a question. Is the stage 3 Cam slightly less powerful than the stage 2 since its a 274 @248 Vs the stage 3: 273 @238? Huh

No, the Stage 2 had the power band up to high in the rpm range.  The Stage 3 brought that down into the the better mid range where this engine does its best work.  Even so, the higher rpm range still runs very strong with #3.

Thank you for clarifying that. I was wondering if it was a typo. But, that makes sense! Cool

So I'm a veteran motorcycle rider, but new to the S40/Savage bike. I plan on buying one real soon (next month I hope) and when searching for some performance parts, I found this site and Lancer's Camshafts. Looking on Webcam's site, the cam only works for up to 2004. Is there a major difference in the engine in 2004 prior vs 2005 and newer? Is there a performance camshaft available for 2005 and newer? Sorry for the newb question, I couldn't find any info anywhere else on this site and just want to be more informed when I purchase the bike.

If you were looking at the LS650 Camshaft on Webcams website then that is not the cam I use or sell.  The cam Webcam makes for me is different from theirs,  with more lift and duration.  Mine is called the Stage 3.  All camshafts made for the LS650 will work in all model year LS650 Savage and S40’s.
The Stage 3 is $329 with a refundable core charge of $100, to be refunded upon receipt of your usable cam core.
Stage 3 cams are in stock.

Thanks Lancer for the clarification. I'll definitely be contacting you for a cam once I get the bike in the garage. Also, I seen you get some performance high compression pistons made from time to time. Do you have any that fit the stock bore without being bored out?

I have Wiseco 11:1 CR pistons in the stock bore of 94mm, & 97mm over bore sizes.

Hey Lancer! I have a couple of questions:

1) Is the stage 3 the cam just a stock cam welded higher and reground? If so, wouldn't longevity be less than stock?

2) If you just do the cam and not the high comp piston, can you still run 87 octane?

3) Just to confirm, if you have the cam and a high comp piston, you must run 91+ octane?

4) How many hours does a cam install typically take for a reasonably mechanical person? How many hours for the 94mm high comp piston?

Thanks!

1) Properly installed and used... no.
I've seen plenty of stock cams worn out before their time for many reasons.
Lack of oil, improper adjustment, extensive idling on the side stand, etc.

2&3) yes, it's the CR that requires premium or regular.

4) cam can be done in 1 day, piston will require taking the engine out of frame, allow 3 days.

If you've never done it before, double the estimated time if you have all parts on hand.
And you should allow time for striped bolts.

Thanks for your response!

Last question: Do you think it is "worth it" to add a cam and VM36/38 to a RYCA kit bike that already has an open air filter and exhaust? Do you think there would be a noticeable gain in power/acceleration?

Yes, especially if you know how to tune.
