How do the bar ends attach?
05/31/12 at 18:00:07

I may want to replace with bar end weights to dampen vibration & stick past the levers to protect them. My daughter will begin to ride her 2012 S40 in two weeks after her MSF class. I would hate her to scuff it up in a 0-2 mph drop, stumble, slip, clutch, curb type slow speed learning stuff. Some bikes you can lift off the sidestand, let them drop and be hard to find damage. Others have a dented tank, bent internal shifting forks, broken levers, ect. I am trying to make her bike the former. If I get the courage I will post a picture of the 24" cross bar I am temporarily adding to the top of the Suzuki case guards. At least the photo will include the water pipe home made bike lift.

The bar end weights are welded in place. If you remove the grips, you'll see the 2 weld marks on the bottom side of the bar. And it's not no tiny little spot weld.

I removed mine from my stock bars, but ruined the bars in the process.

I think he means the little chrome plastic caps...  they just pull off...
...but the stock bars are slugged with huge welded in weights...
You can't get those out. like Simon says... it's hopeless...
If you want bar ends... you'll have to buy new bars...

Thanks for the info. I will not pull the plastic caps off since they have weights welded in. So that area is on it's own. After the 600 mile service I will remove the brass plug and hopefully improve the flat spot right of Idle. That is enough to knock a newbie over LOL.

Parking lot falls are most common for newbies. Just buy some crash bars and remove them next year. That should keep the worst from happening.

Simon, were the weights steel, brass, or what?   And do you remember about how big/long they were or how much they weighed?
