Oil fill plug size?
05/30/12 at 12:48:00

Does anyone know the size and thread pitch of the oil fill plug? I found a guy that might have oil temp gauges that will fit the savage. Im 1000 miles from my bike or i would get the info myself.

Come on now someone with mechanical knowledge this is an easy job. Most any machine shop or old hardware store can give the size and pitch of the threads.

Drifter, I seem to remember something about this before, there is not a straight shot down into the oil from the filler hole, I just checked and can't get my little finger down the hole to the first joint 3/4 inch maybe?  Plate, baffle or somethign is in the way.  IDK about the size, thread and pitch, don;t have anything to check it with, that I know.

Yes, there is a baffle plate below the fill hole, I forgot about that,, Side cover off & its accessible. I think all it does is keep from blowing a ton of oil if the engine is running when the plug is removed.

Well,, could you take a fill plug & punch it out & have an adapter welded on it?

Lots of ways to make one work, but way easier to just screw one in that fits to start with. My local machine shop wanted more to make an adaptor than the whole gauge costs. Hopefully this guy has some the size we need or could make up a few.

Hello out there! This is my first posting here  Smiley
M20x1,5 is right, but... those Oil temp plugs are a bit nonsense on the S40/Savage. As mentioned before, they cannot show oil temp, they only can show the engine case temperature, and the reading of that bit is not easy while driving.

If someone just looks for a replacement of the original plug, ok...

Regards, Lou

mostly correct, the dip stick in not in an oil bath unless it's 12 inches long, and you'll probably need a knink in it.
But does see splash, and there's lots of splash, just leave your oil fill cap off one day.

I bought this one from this vendor five years ago via eBay and it's still doing great.

why not use the front port that can be used for an oil cooler for the oil temp port? would probably be much easier finding an adapter to fit that then the fill port.

Rob, what kind of temps do you see, i guess your gauge is in C not F?

My Triumph gauge gets only splash and sits about 1/2 inch below the case on hot days it reads 250 degrees, the thermocouple is isolated from the case so its reading actual oil temps.

RFW, find an adaptor and gauge that fits and costs about the same and we will do it.
