Bipolar muffler experience
05/26/12 at 17:58:39

So today I stop by the local Harley custom shop for a muffler. They have 10 kabillion different ones! I choose a pretty one and a clamp and handed over $15. Well, a $20 but he gave me $5 back. The HD number is 65747-94. I got no tin cans so I stop by my local Ace Hardware (because Ace is the place) and purchase mounting hardware and some non-hardening Permatex rated to 400*F. The stock muffler comes off MUCH easier than expected. I put half a tube of the black goop on my head pipe and  mount the new muffler. Man did it look good! I couldn't believe the difference! I was elated. Manic actually! I let the goop dry a bit then fired it up. Instant depression! While the tone was slightly deeper than my stock propane garage heater with 8 5/16" holes in its butt, it was very quiet. Oh well, at least it didn't pop and fart no more. Two miles down the road something begins to stink. I smelled my arm pits...nope, not them. I stuck my hand down the back of my pants then smelled my fingers. Not that either. At a red light I figured the smell must have something to do with the pretty smoke coming from my exhaust. The black goop turned into a black liquid that smelled worse than my cat's litterbox after he eats the BUMBLE BEE Sensations Spicy Thai Chili Seasoned Tuna! Now I have a mess to clean up. I need to go to a muffler shop and have an adapter made (or buy a can of peas). And I need to find a way to drill out the baffles in the HD muffler. Or I may just go back and pick up some of the used aftermarket mufflers he has laying around. I don't know. Anyhow, that's my story. Thanks for listening.

It was louder than the stock one before I drilled holes in it. I figured all Harley mufflers were the same as long as they mounted the same. I guess not. But Googley says that the P/N I got is from a 95-05 Dyna.  Undecided

Well, I popped out the freeze plug in the baffle and it was just as loud and annoying as no muffler at all. Definitely a straight pipe. I drilled a 3/8" hole in the freeze plug and stuffed it back in. I think it may be perfect! Still has the deeper tone and is a touch louder than my stock muffler with the 8 5/16" holes. I will attach a sound file. Oh...and I forgot to cut slits in the HD muffler so I did that and took out the spacer in the center of the clamp so it tightened up further. More testing is needed, but so far no leaks!

I don't know how it would make sparks. I had the muffler off and the freeze plug on the bench when I did the drilling. Is there something I should be concerned about?

Yup,... that plug is going to fire out the back of the muffler when you least expect...
I'd go get another one and try again...

Problee nothing for you to be shook about, I was running a grinder on the end of the header, threw sparks at the vent tube & Kerblooey! Spent the price of a new battery & a coupla hours cleanup..I just toss that out when it looks like someone mite benefit..Id hate to see someone step in that beartrap when a little notice would save them, others will read it, too.
