Cylinder head gasket change

Is it necessary to remove the engine from the frame to change the gasket between the cylinder head & cylinder ?  Looks really tight.

If you do some searching you might find your answer. I vaguely recall someone here taking the jug out with the motor in frame but I dont know for sure. I can tell you that it is 100X easier with the motor removed.

Easier: yes.
Necessary: no.

It was... many moons ago when I last did it to replace the jug gasket. I had to loosen all the mounting bolts so the engine would sink about 1/2" and lay in the "frame rails".
This time I pulled out the rear bracket and just slid it out.

ive had to do it 3 times in the past month, haha id say ive gotten pretty good at ripping this thing apart. but no you dont have to just to remove the head, it will take a minute to figure it out, you have to get it up over 3 of the bolts, then rotate it clockwise on the last bolt and you can squeeze thru just barely, it was a pain in the butt for me the first time. seeing other posts about loosening motor mounts seems like it would prolly make the job a lil easier. The cylinder however will not come out with out removing the engine "atleast i dont think it could with out being able to remove the head bolts that go to the crank case

Double nut, baby.
Tighten one nut against the other then use it to gain mechanical advantage and rotate the stud from a distance. I do believe this is why one head nut is open and the other three are acorns.

Thanks to all. I can deal with removing the cylinder head but won't get into removing the engine with all it's attachments.

I had to do it because the jug developed a leak.
