My manual has not arrived yet.....oil level ????

I have a manual ordered, (didn't come with the bike  Angry)but it has not arrived.  so i will ask the experts.

What is the proper way to check the oil level in my 07 S40?  at what level should it be in the sight window?  do the specs show to check it cold? running? vertical? on the kickstand?

oil was changed when i bought it, has about 900 miles on it since, bike is running and sounding great now, but as important as that level is, would really like to know.

i know it's simple, but i appreciate the help.

Scott, the savage is very forgiving on oil level so don't sweat it.  You can either have the bike plumb and have oil halfway up the sight glass on the right side of your engine... or if you don't want to do that balancing act, just fill it so that oil is barely visible at the bottom of the glass while the bike is on the sidestand.

There are a couple of ways.  The official way is to hold the bike vertical and the oil should be about mid way in the window.  You can use a brick or something to get the bike up straight.

Another, common method is put the bike on the sidestand and make sure the oil is just visible in the window.  This gives a little overfill, I guess, but it does not hurt anything and the extra oil is like extra insurance.

Check you oil

The manual shows that there are two small level notches in the sides of the window.  The upper one is the upper level......and the lower one is the lower level.  The upper notch is about 1/4th way down the window, and the bottom one is about 1/4th way up from the bottom.

Keep it between the two notches.

another in a long list of reasons you guys have become invaluable to me and this bike.

thanks a ton. i saw the two notches, and felt like they were "intentional" but wanted to make sure.  i like the "just in the window on the side stand" option.

thanks again!!!!  maybe some day i will be able to pay all this forward.

I dropped my bike while stupidly trying to check the oil vertically. Never again !!

When I bought mine used, the oil was on the low mark when on the side stand. Come to find out, thats the way the PO always did it. Since then a couple yrs later, the oil level sits midway the glass on the stand when cold, and never any sign of a drop of oil indicating overfill.
