Belt squeal.
05/18/12 at 14:14:17

My belt squeals, especially when it's cool outside. I have centered the belt on the rear pulley, but it us rubbing on the outside edge of the drive pulley. The tension is good.
Is there a quick fix for this?

You could move the belt over a bit even if its not centered on the rear.

I always check the tech section first before I ask a question.
But there also fresh ideas as well.

Mine squeaks when cold, and its tracking perfectly. I put it in the same catagory as backfiring,.......if it ever quits, I'll fix it !

In reality, if its not tracking on center, its time to fix it,....quick fix or not.
I would loosen the axle (but not too loose) and tighten the adjuster bolt
on the side it is rubbing on. But tighten only 1 flat (1/5 revolution) at a time. Just tightening the axle nut can change the tracking.

Or if belt tension is already quite tight, you would have to loosen the opposite side. But then you knew that. Wink

I noticed when it's cool in the morning, the belt is tracking on the inside, when it's hot in the afternoon its tracking on the outside. So I went by the industrial standard and waited for it to be 68 degrees ambient temperature and adjusted it to track in the middle. This worked very well for years now. Haven't adjusted it in three years again. When I take out the wheel for the tire to be replaced, I just measure the distance between the bolt heads and the adjuster body with my caliper before I loosen everything up. On assembly I just adjust it to the previously taken measurements and lock it all down. And the belt tracks dead on like it was before. No more adjustments.

JOG has a method that involves some chanting, burning sage, walking in circles, and the slaughter of 3 chickens...
I can't remember which order it goes in though... Huh...

my method involves belt dressing spray and slaughtering just 2 chickens. We burn other things around here but no sage.

Home remendy "

Raise the rear tire (tree limb and come-a-long) with  the rear wheel spinning (1st gear) ... get your angle grinder (yea !!!!)

angle the edge of the belt so less of it touches the edge of the pully !.   The squeek will go-a-way  !
