Where to connect LED string?
05/11/12 at 18:36:20

OK, I snagged 4 - 12" blue LED strings off Ebay (cheap, like in $6 shipped...they shipped from Asia, but I got them pretty quickly).  I saw some pics of bikes with LED strings lighting up the engine and chrome...looks pretty cool IMO, so I decided to give it a try and trick it out just a little.  Grin

I'm thinking of attaching one LED string to the bottom edge of the gas tank on either side, and probably one LED string to the underside of the rear side frame (the parts the sissy bar is attached to at the back) on each side.  Somewhere around those areas look like it would get the best reflection off the chrome parts. Some good double-side tape will *probably* hold it well enough. (Yes?)

QUESTION: Where's the best place to wire them in?  I *think* I probably want them to come on anytime the ignition is on (and the rest of the lights are on) versus having a seperate switch.  Where's the best spot to tap into the wiring?  Near the ignition switch?  Near the tail-light or headlight?  What do you guys suggest?  I'd guess they draw a reasonably small amount of current (probably equivalent to adding two more tail-light bulbs or so)

Cheers,
Dave

Near the ignition switch... if you connect to the on position, it will work like you say... if you connect to the park side, it will work in the on or park position...
Check local laws... blue running lights are illegal here, if you can see them from front or rear...
You may want to insert a switch between the connection and the lights, so that you can turn them off,.. particularly if a cop tells you to...

Thanks.  So, tap into the ignition wire for positive.  What about ground?

I don't think blue LED's are illegal here in NC...I'm pretty sure I've seen some tricked-out cars with blue LED's on them.

Cheers,
Dave

Ground to metal... anywhere that's connected to the frame... or look around under the seat.. mine has a couple of ground wires that connect to nothing under there... (check them with a meter to be sure)...

I took the seat off last night and poked around a bit.  Lo and behold, there was already an unused connector wired in with switched (+) and ground just lying there under the seat.  (The previous owner had a hands-free communication system hooked up to the bike...I assume that was probably the connector for that gizmo).  I smashed two spade crimp connectors that would slide securely down the sides of this jack, and voila...easy switched power.

I mounted an LED string to the frame between the tank and seat on both sides (black cable ties worked well for this), and under the chrome side frames on each side of the back (cable ties right now, but nothing good to connect them too, so I need to get some good double-sided tape or something).

The blue LED's illuminate the engine and exhaust/chain guard and reflect nicely off the chrome, plus they illuminate some of the ground underneath the bike.

I dunno, maybe this is a little juvenile for a 45 year old  Cheesy but I think it looks pretty darned cool.  Grin  Rational justification:  Anything that makes you easier to see has got to be a good thing...right?  ("Whatever Dave.")  Wink  I'll try to post some pics later today.

Cheers!
