two-fer Valve adjustment

So, I have now put 300 miles on my new to me Savage ( 2002 with 475 miles). I took her up to 70mph and everything seems ok ... but the valves got noisy.  So here I am at about 700 miles and the valves are noisy. I read the post about the owners manual claiming the valves needed a break-in adjustment and most agreed that was hooey.

I went by a local bike maechanic shop and he said the valves were noisy and that I should adjust them, or have him do it. I told him the story of the bike ( sat for ten years) and He said just needs a good "spring tune-up". Includes:
valve adjustment (includes new valve cover gasket)
carb refreash
oil and filter ( which I already did)
total cost $230

thats sounds VERY expensive to me.

What say the brain trust?
Note: I am not comfortable adjusting the valves myself. The carb... maybe.

PS: this is NOT the dealership.. just a local bike mechanic
PPS: the only Suzuki dealership, has very low marks for service, and zero web presence.  They like to sell... service... not so much.

That guy is wanting to take the little lady out for a BIG Nite on the Town,, & you're payin,,

That's a shaftin' price,, & BTW, there's no need for a new gasket, the valve covers are O rings,
