Around here the do not even know what a Moped is. I stopped at the local Moped store and not a single thing with peddles. I told the sales lady to look up moped in the dictionary, and walked out.

You're right of course, I doubt if they even make mopeds anymore. There are little gas or electric motors available for bicycles these days.

Over the years the word 'moped' has become synonomous with any scooter of 50cc's or less.

yes, most folks don't know what they are. TOMOS still makes them I think and the mopeders really dislike the "scooters"...they call them toilets...haha

Yup, mopeds/scooters are GREAT!

With today's gas prices and complex modern lifestyle
small simple bikes are one of the last refuges of sane
functionality; The classic vespas are cool, the modern
400-500cc scoots are amazing and the honda cub
and original monkey are THE best ever.

This one is one of mine, it's just an old 2-stroke Hercules
50 to 70cc project that runs like hell on wheels (top speed
around 110kmh/65mph) it's completely illegal cause it's
just supposed to be able to go 45kmh/30mph) so registering
it is out of the question, as is insurance, but who cares.

I just use it for fun in the forest/fields sometimes and
take it to festivals, fairs, bikerfests and places where
i know the cops won't control paperwork, hehe.

this is my other, street legal/registered, scooter
(but after messing with the carb, exhaust and
pulley it now also goes waaay faster that it's
supposed to go; this one goes about 50mph)
...last month I took off the "rally" decals, now its all black!  Cheesy

2004 Aprilia Rally 50cc

...and this one is my trusty daily commuter, hey. it's almost a moped.

...lots of cool little bikes around that just need a bit of TLC,
check out this classic/very rare RUMI SCOOTER!

Check out this little gem:
http://austin.craigslist.org/mcy/3014672227.html

I'd go pick it up if I wasn't already full up on bikes.  A good problem to have.  I am digging the Vino scooter.  It just needs a little maintenance and minor crash damage repair and it'll be good as new.  I discovered I can put a 12-pack of beer on the floorboard, whereas on a motorcycle I usually only carry a 6-pack in my man-purse.  So the scooter will pay for itself in no time!  Cool

850 seems a bit steep...I picked mine up for 250...took me 10-15 minutes to get it running. I think the guy that sold it to me didn't have his starting procedure down.
I put on a new carb, petcock, headlight, fuel line, brake cables, throttle cable, choke cable and I was only into it for 350 total...
