Bobbed rear fender mounting question
05/07/12 at 09:54:39

Hey guys,

I just picked up an 09 S40, and I'm trying to make a few subtle changes to suit my aesthetic a little more.  My main project right now is ditching the stock seat and rear fender and replacing it with a solo seat (that I'm making from scratch...we'll see how that goes) and I've fabbed up a plate/bracket that mounts under the end of the rear frame (where the original fender mounted) that relocates my rectifier, electrical, etc so it sits tucked away under the seat.  I've taken a generic trailer fender and cut it to form a new rear fender, but I'm hoping you guys can share some advice on where to mount it.  Initially, I was going to mount it to the frame, but I don't like the huge wheel gap.  So, I need to mount it to the swing arm so it'll travel with the suspension.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!  Oh, and I should mention (just to add another challenge) that I am trying to do all this without cutting or welding any of the frame so I can put it all back to stock if need be.

Thanks!!

you may have to make some kind of bracket that mounts to the swing arm and bolt it to the fender.

So far I haven't cut anything!  It's taken a lot of standing around, head tilted while staring at the bike with a coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other, but this approach has worked so far!   Grin

I'll post some pics as soon as I can of the bracket to hold the electrical and the seat.  This fender mount may kill my 'no cutting' dream...unless someone out there has some words of wisdom.

Agreed.  But I just further complicated things...I just installed a Lowbrow Customs strut-mount brake light/plate holder, and that pretty well taps out my right side strut bolt - the point I WAS planning on mounting from.  Back to the drawing board...

I'm thinking of the same thing on my bike. What size trailer fender are you using? Any pictures?

Stock belt drive.  Definitely keeping it that way.  IMO, belt drive is one of the coolest features of these bikes!

I got it at Princess Auto...I want to say a 7" (?) generic trailer fender.  Not sure if you have Princess Auto in the States, but I got the idea from guys down south that bought the same thing from tractor supply stores, etc.  They shouldn't be too hard to track down.  I've chopped mine in half (using the other half on my '80 Honda CB650 project), but I'll snap a photo asap...should still give you the idea.

Ok, here are some progress pics:

The bracket to hold the electrical (and soon-to-be solo seat mount)

The solo seat pan in place to show where I'm going with it

If you can find a way to keep from cutting the frame and turn it into a reversable solo rider I will buy you a beer! I've been wanting to turn it into a solo ride for a long time but I don't because of the occasional time that my wife and I do a weekend trip. If I could flip back and forth (solo/stock) with only a few hours work in between I would be a very happy man.
