I DID IT!
05/05/12 at 15:30:51

I wanted to say a big THANKS to those of you who have posted stuff in the technical forum.  Today I managed to check the clearance on the valves of my S40 with the help of the Clymers Manual and the helpful posts on this site.  All valves were right in the middle of tolerance!

Thanks!

Not much room in there, is there? How hard was it? Did you take the feeler gauges out of the pack> Bend them any? Or did you spring for the special ones?
You did get the jam nuts good & snug, right?

The manual said use the straight feeler gauge (or I had the idea i needed the straight one), but I wound up bending them to get the leaf in there.  The special ones would have been nice.  Didn't have to do any adjustment, so I left all those as is, then replace all the covers, etc and checked them all twice.  Would definately be nice to have smaller hands for this job.

I dont know how you got the feeler in there,, I never can get min lined up. I have to open the adjuster up, get the gauge in, screw it down ( fingertips) & move the feeler a little to see how it feels, Then I go about setting the jam nut & not turning the adjuster. I have an offset screwdriver to hold the adjusters..Still kinda tricky

@223fan - not the same person (and here I thought I had a unique handle)

@justin - it took a while, but i found repeatetedly poking the gauge in the general area for 5-10 minutes eventually worked  Smiley

Anytime you use the correct spelling for a screen name you run the risk of multiplicity.
