Petcock and float questions
05/04/12 at 16:46:56

I have a raptor petcock and forgot to turn it to off a few days ago.  Tried to start the bike today and it spewed gas out the muffler and would not idle- died if I let off the gas.  I checked my oil window and yep - full.  I was worried I ruined my engine. I drained the oil, refilled and it seems to run fine now.  Still wonder if there was damage done.

Here is the question.  Does this indicate a float or other carb component out of adjustment or is this just the nature of the beast when you remove the vacuum system?  If this is how it functions, I'm going to need a big sign on the bars that says TURN OFF THE GAS STUPID!  Or something that will shock me if I get off the bike with the gas on. Shocked

Indicates with 100% certainty that your float stuck...

If it's runnin' okay now... it's unstuck...
This would have happened with, or without a Raptor...  the difference is, the Raptor allowed it to leak when you parked it, instead of while riding...

It's the nature of the floats in the carb...  but not either petcock...

Glad you caught it,.. and changed your oil, instead of riding with it...

You might run a teaspoon or two of Seafoam, or Marvel's oil, in your gas tank, next couple of fill-ups... to clean and lube the carb...
Wink...

(if you had turned the gas off when you parked... it might have started leaking on the road.
Better to leak while parked, where you'll see it)...

Thing is, it spewed gas like that once or twice before when it sat for a couple hours with the petcock on.  My wife tried to start it once and I thought maybe she just gave it the gas while cranking.  Now I think its filling the engine whenever it sits with the gas on.  I just comleted a bobber build witch included a complete carb clean and replaced all the jets that were clogged when I bought the bike- would seafoam still clean things up?  Float seemed to function properly when I put the carb all back together.  Bike wouldn't run when I bought it.  Got about 200 miles on it now since finishing it.  Runs good but I need to figure out why its flowing fuel like this.

Okay,..

Turn off your petcock,.. pull the fuel line at the petcock,.. and blow into the line...  if no air flows,.. a fuel additive might help...
If air blows... pull the floatbowl,.. and hold the floats up, gently with your finger...   ...blow again,.. and see if air flows... if it don't,.. try the additive...
If, air still blows through... your float needle is either obstructed or worn out... remove, clean, or replace...

Wink...

PS... you give excellent problem descriptions...
PSS... how's your gas mileage?... you may be leaking fuel while running...

I need to check the mileage.  Where's my trip meter?  I kid, I kid.  Not used to having to take a notepad along.

Serowbot,
Thanks for the help.  Question.
Do this with the bowl full of gas or empty it first?

I'm hoping it's full... if it's not, air will blow through, and you'll have to manually push the floats up with your finger (a la second test), to check the float needle...

Heard bubbles on test 1.  Pulled the bowl.  No air flow with float held up.  Air flows when I drop it back down.  All as it should be right?  I'll go get some additive and try it.  This bike leans plenty far on the side stand.  Maybe I have a float that likes to stick when leaned over.

Measured my float adjustment.  I beleive its within spec. although the manual's description of exactly where to set the float to measure leaves a little to be desired.  I put some sea foam in to see what happens.  I'm reluctant to let it sit with the fuel on after some miles and possibly ruin another batch of oil.

It took me a long time to get that adjustment done in a way that didnt leave me wondering if I had set myself up for a sump full of fuel.
